Rest assured, the new CDC director thinks ‘abortion surveillance’ is essential

“The CDC collects data on abortions that are committed in the United States of America through a system called the Abortion Reporting System,” Hawley said when asking Schwartz whether she would commit to collecting detailed data on abortions. “This system is voluntary, and so a number of states, not coincidentally large blue states, do not turn over any data, so that it’s difficult to get a picture of just how many abortions and under what circumstances are committed in this country. We do know the numbers are going way up.”

“Senator, you have my commitment,” Schwartz replied. “Abortion surveillance is absolutely a critical component of what the CDC is currently doing.”…

US refuses to back UN declaration on noncommunicable diseases | United Nations | The Guardian

Addressing the assembly, Kennedy said: "We cannot accept language that pushes destructive gender ideology. Neither can we accept claims of a constitutional or international right to abortion. [The declaration] exceeds the UN's proper role while ignoring the most pressing health issues, and that's why the United States will reject it."

There is no mention of reproductive rights or gender in the declaration except in reference to specific challenges facing women.

Despite the US's stance, the declaration is expected to be agreed on in the coming weeks. Katie Dain, the chief executive of the NCD Alliance, an NGO, said: "The unity we saw today proves that most governments are ready to take the baton on NCDs."…

He spoke to Brad about reproductive rights, education, religious freedom, and how Texans are fighting back.

What's behind the 'pronatalist' movement to boost the birth rate? (Tonya Mosley; Fresh Air podcast)

A once-fringe movement claims having more babies is the only way to save civilization. NPR reporter Lisa Hagen and sociologist Karen Guzzo explain who's empowering pronatalism today.

This is FRESH AIR. I'm Tonya Mosley. Have more babies, or civilization dies. That's the rallying cry behind a once fringe ideology that has made its way into the mainstream. Pronatalism has been in the news lately, with Trump policies underway to increase birth rates by giving away a $5,000 baby bonus for parents and a national medal of motherhood for moms who have six or more children. Pronatalists warn of an apocalyptic future - that if birth rates in the U.S. keep falling, we might be headed towards economic collapse, even extinction. They're pushing ideas like genetic engineering, limiting access to contraceptives, and the "great replacement" conspiracy theory, which believes that there is a plot to replace white populations with nonwhite immigrants.

One of the more well-known faces of the movement is Elon Musk, who reportedly has at least 14 biological children with several different women and has called the world's population decline the greatest threat to humanity. But critics argue that this movement isn't solely about increasing birth rates. It's about who gets to reproduce, under what terms and at what cost? They argue that this movement ignores the skyrocketing price of child care in our country, our broken parental leave systems and a woman's autonomy over her own body.

Well, today, we're joined by two people whose work explores this movement and the motivations behind it. Dr. Karen Guzzo is a sociologist and fertility expert serving as the director of the Carolina Population Center and a professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. And Lisa Hagen is a reporter for NPR who has been covering the pronatal movement and attended last month's second annual Natal Con conference in Austin. Lisa Hagen and Karen Guzzo, welcome to FRESH AIR.

Trump’s Evangelical Supporters Just Lost Their Best Excuse - The Atlantic

So voting for Donald Trump didn't mean you were voting for fewer abortions. Abortions declined by nearly 30 percent during Barack Obama's two terms, and by the end of his term, the abortion rate and ratio were below what they were in 1973, when Roe v. Wade was decided.

But they went up again on Trump's watch. Public opposition to abortion is collapsing.

Pro-life initiatives are being beaten even in very conservative states. The GOP has jettisoned its pro-life plank after having it in place for nearly a half century. And Trump himself is now saying he'd be great for "reproductive rights," a position that pro-lifers have long insisted is a moral abomination.

JD Vance knocks Andy Beshear over pregnancy from rape remark

"It's ridiculous, but it's also deflection. JD Vance knows that he and Donald Trump are so wrong on this issue, and so he's trying to make himself the victim," Beshear said, noting that the reproductive-rights advocates who spoke at the Democratic National Convention on Monday were victims.

"As a man, JD Vance will never have to face any of this personally, but it's sad that he lacks the empathy to be able to put himself in a different position and to understand why having exceptions, having reproductive freedom, is so important in the first place," he added. "Obviously, I never wish harm on anyone. It [is] just again, deflection, trying to make himself and Donald Trump the victims."…

Opinion | The Kamala Harris Moment Has Arrived - The New York Times

"The idea that someone who survives a crime of violence, a violation to their body, would then be told they don't have the authority to decide what happens to their body next, that's immoral."

Weekly Roundup: SCOTUS and McConnell Surrender to Trump (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

Brad and Dan begin by demonstrating how Mitch McConnell, who is stepping down from Senate leadership because of his party’s extremism, created that extremism by poking holes in democracy. His work is coming to fruition in SCOTUS’ decision to hear the Trump immunity appeal – and thus almost guarantee he won’t be prosecuted before the election.

In the second segment the hosts trace the fallout of the Alabama IVF decision, showing how it is the work of 6 decades of organizing to end reproductive rights, a sign of the Catholicization of sexual politics in America, and an example of bad natural theology.

In the final segment, they take on a new essay at the National Review titled “A Case for a Theocentric Right.”
