The FDA is a complete mess’: Trump makes fate of agency chief unclear as public trust plummets
Makary’s tenure at the FDA has been marked by several controversial decisions on drugs and vaccines amid plummeting staff morale over layoffs and the appointments of divisive officials. There have also been concerns about the transition from two clinical trials to one, the commissioner’s new priority review vouchers and “data-free” regulatory decisions...

The American Lung Association (ALA) similarly blamed Juul for the spike in youth vaping.
"This is a serious misstep," Ranjana Caple, senior manager of federal advocacy for ALA, said in a statement. Vaping damages young people’s lungs as much as smoking, study suggests
"Both vapers and smokers showed signs that their blood vessels were not working as well as the non-smoking and non-vaping group, according to the blood tests and ultrasound scans.
"The smokers and the vapers were more out of breath, experienced intense leg fatigue and had higher levels of lactate in their blood, a sign of muscle fatigue, even before they reached their maximum level of exercise."…
Medical researchers have found evidence that vaping increases the risk of cancer, because it changes their DNA, and also that it may damage the brain and vital organs because e-cigarette aerosols and liquids can contain traces of toxic metals such as lead and uranium…

Vaping Is Big Tobacco’s Bait and Switch
I was 15 when I started smoking, and so were most of my friends. We smoked to rebel against our parents but also to identify with them — of course they smoked, even as they told us not to. We smoked because it was feminine and sexy, and also masculine and tough. Because celebrities did it, and they looked cool. Because the prissy kids didn’t do it, and we weren’t them. Because cigarettes were both forbidden and easy to get: ten quarters in a cigarette vending machine, which you could still find in most pizza joints and doughnut shops in suburban New Jersey in the early 1990s...

Vaping: E-Liquid Chemical Linked to "Popcorn Lung" Harms Cells in Airways | Inverse
In 2007, health officials in California revealed that numerous workers in local flavoring factories suffered from a rare, life-threatening lung condition called bronchiolitis obliterans, later nicknamed “popcorn lung.” The illness, which scars the air sacs of the lungs and makes breathing difficult, stemmed from exposure to diacetyl, a yellow chemical used to give microwave popcorn its buttery flavor. ....
