History Minute (041): The Pilgrims and Puritans did not come to America for religious freedom.

As explained by Constitutional scholar and author Andrew Seidel, the Puritans and Pilgrims did come to America to escape persecution, but not to establish religious freedom. Rather, they came to establish theocracies where their religious beliefs could be enforced by the government. They were intolerant of any religious views that didn't align with their own, to the point of persecuting and executing people with differing views. And they also gleefully committed atrocities against native peoples in the name of their religion.

When it came time to write the Constitution, these are the very examples that the Founding Fathers looked  at and said this is no way to run a country, and that they deliberately avoided. That is why the Founding Fathers wrote the U.S. Constitution to keep religion separate from government.

And by the way, as far as persecution goes: Who was persecuting them in England? Other Christians.

Andrew also provides suggestions for how to discuss this topic with others over the holidays without causing tension.

Weekly Roundup: “I Love Hitler” Group Chat Leaked + The Technocrats Who Want Monarchy + No Kings! (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

Brad and Dan unpack a disturbing leaked group chat among young Republican leaders that reveals casual racism, homophobia, and even Nazi sympathies. They analyze how JD Vance publicly defended the individuals involved by dismissing their comments as “edgy jokes,” exposing a growing tolerance for extremism within parts of the GOP.

The discussion expands to examine the double standard in political outrage — why some are harshly punished for crossing lines while others face little consequence — and how in-group loyalty continues to erode moral accountability in American politics.

The conversation then moves into deeper territory, exploring the psychological and ideological forces driving this shift. The hosts dissect the narratives of victimhood and persecution that fuel right-wing identity politics, as well as the appeal of hierarchy and order for certain business and political leaders who see democracy as messy or unstable. They highlight the challenge of mobilizing citizens around democracy itself, arguing that the fight for freedom requires a new, inspiring story that unites people rather than divides them.

The episode concludes with a preview of the upcoming “No Kings” rallies — events centered on defending democracy through collective action — and a call for listeners to stay engaged in the struggle for a just and inclusive society.

The new definition of antisemitism is transforming America – and serving a Christian nationalist plan

"If liberal Jews can be erased – either pushed out of the public eye or denied as genuine or authentic specimens of Judaism – then the challenge of liberal Jews disappears with it," Schraub explains.

This isn't just a theoretical concern – it's already happening. Project Esther, a new initiative launched by the Christian nationalist Heritage Foundation known for Project 2025, offers a blueprint for combating antisemitism that targets not only pro-Palestinian groups but what it calls a broader "coalition of leftist, progressive organizations" – including Jewish groups – through tools such as anti-terrorism prosecutions, deportations, public firings, and efforts to "disrupt and degrade" dissenting movements. Despite its use of Jewish religious language, the plan has virtually no Jewish authors and is riddled with basic errors, including misrepresentations of Jewish texts. It chastises American Jews who don't align with its worldview, calling them "complacent" and their positions "inexplicable".

This farcical performance of concern would merely be amusing were it not for the very real possibility that it serves as a prelude for persecution.
