Trump Administration Suggested Funding Afrikaner Group in South Africa — ProPublica

Recently, we published our investigation that found one answer to that question in a little-known bureau of the State Department that has dramatically transformed under Trump. For decades, the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, known as DRL, has supported human rights in some of the most oppressive countries in the world. Now, our reporting found, it’s planning to direct funds to controversial groups supporting right-wing causes in Europe and elsewhere…

South African government, Afrikaners reject Trump administration claim of a humanitarian emergency | PBS News

President Donald Trump announced he was increasing the refugee cap for white South Africans because of "an unforeseen emergency refugee situation." He blamed the South African government for "recent increases in the incitement of racially motivated violence," but gave no specific information. .

South African Foreign Ministry spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said accusations of systemic persecution of Afrikaners were unfounded and that some beneficiaries of the refugee program have chosen to return to South Africa…

Spokesman Jaco Kleynhans said the organization didn't know about any "unforeseen emergency refugee situation" for Afrikaners but respected the autonomy of U.S. refugee policy...

Trump’s ‘white genocide’ claims ignore the reality of life and crime in South Africa | Trump administration | The Guardian

It was not immediately clear where the white crosses had been filmed or even whether the footage was real. The Whitkruis Monument is a memorial to dead South African farmers, but the crosses are clustered on a hillside on private land.

While there have been farm murders involving horrific violence, killers interviewed in jail told Rudolph Zinn, a University of Limpopo professor, that they targeted victims of all races for cash and valuables. In the last quarter of 2024, South African police recorded 12 murders on farms, including Black-owned smallholder plots, out of almost 7,000 murders across the country...

Trump falsely claims Australia being ‘inundated’ by white South Africans fleeing ‘genocide’ | Australian immigration and asylum | The Guardian

South Africa is not in the top 10 of countries of origin for humanitarian entrants into Australia. Conflict-torn countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Myanmar dominate that list.

Australia's South African-born population (not limited to humanitarian or refugee entrants) is the seventh-largest migrant community in Australia. It represents about 2.6% of Australia's overseas-born population and 0.8% of Australia's total population...

US grants asylum to 54 white Afrikaner South Africans, reports say

South Africa's foreign ministry said in a statement: "It is most regrettable that it appears that the resettlement of South Africans to the United States under the guise of being 'refugees' is entirely politically motivated and designed to question South Africa's constitutional democracy; a country which has in fact suffered true persecution under apartheid rule and has worked tirelessly to prevent such levels of discrimination from ever occurring again."

‘White supremacists in suits and ties’: the rightwing Afrikaner group in Trump’s ear

How the roots of the ‘PayPal mafia’ extend to apartheid South Africa | Elon Musk | The Guardian

"What is indisputable is that Musk and Thiel grew up amid incredible privilege where the racial hierarchy was clear. Those who claimed to reject apartheid sought to explain this privilege not as the result of systemic racial oppression but the natural order of things thanks to their own abilities. That in turn led some to regard all forms government as oppressive and true liberty as an individual battle for survival…"

"You can call this anti-democratic principle dictatorship if you wish. In Italy it is called 'Fascism', in Germany 'German National Socialism' and in South Africa 'Christian nationalism'."…

"We all [white South Africans], by the very nature of our privileges and our place in the racial hierarchy, grew up believing we were the master race, even if we didn't actively think about it,"…

'He was no leader': South Africa denounces Trump's reported comments about Mandela

The report that U.S. President Donald Trump made crude, disparaging remarks about Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning former leader, has drawn an angry response from South Africa’s ruling party and others. According to a book written by Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal lawyer, Trump said that Mandela, who guided South Africa in its politically fraught transition from a racist apartheid government to a democracy, was a terrible leader. Cohen wrote that after Mandela’s death in 2013, Trump said: “Mandela f---ed the whole country up. Now it’s a s---hole. F--- Mandela. He was no leader.”
