Rest assured, the new CDC director thinks ‘abortion surveillance’ is essential
“The CDC collects data on abortions that are committed in the United States of America through a system called the Abortion Reporting System,” Hawley said when asking Schwartz whether she would commit to collecting detailed data on abortions. “This system is voluntary, and so a number of states, not coincidentally large blue states, do not turn over any data, so that it’s difficult to get a picture of just how many abortions and under what circumstances are committed in this country. We do know the numbers are going way up.”
“Senator, you have my commitment,” Schwartz replied. “Abortion surveillance is absolutely a critical component of what the CDC is currently doing.”…

Judge rules FDA restrictions on mifepristone are arbitrary and capricious
Previous FDA reviews have “steadfastly found” that mifepristone is safe and effective, Ballou wrote in his decision.
Fifth circuit judges are set to hear arguments in a separate case, with Louisiana asking the FDA to reinstate previous restrictions that would block mail-order mifepristone and put limits on pharmacy prescriptions…
“The efforts to restrict it are not about science or safety – they are about making abortion harder to access,” said Nancy Northup, president and CEO at the center, in a statement. She called Friday’s ruling “a win for science”…

Supreme court allows abortion pill mifepristone to continue to be available by mail
Earlier on Thursday, the entire Senate Democratic caucus reintroduced a resolution “affirming that the abortion medication mifepristone is safe and effective”, and underscoring that law and policy related to the medication must be equitable, transparent, and based on the best available peer-reviewed evidence-based science. While not binding, the formal expression of all 45 Democratic senators’ opinion is “notable”.
“Healthcare providers have safely prescribed mifepristone for decades – limiting access to this medication would be another blow to our hard-earned reproductive freedoms. Extremists should never dictate a woman’s right to reproductive care,” wrote Jeanne Shaheen, a New Hampshire senator, on Xabout the resolution...
