Trump officials plan to repeal limits on ‘forever chemicals’ in drinking water

Public health advocates on Monday condemned the EPA.

“Zeldin and Kennedy are trying to sell potions out of the back of a covered wagon,” said Dr Anna Reade, director of Pfas advocacy at Natural Resources Defense Council. “The millions of Americans demanding safe drinking water are not going to fall for their hocus pocus.”

The move is widely viewed as at odds with Donald Trump’s pledge to eliminate toxic chemicals from drinking water…

Trump administration's rollback of regulations frustrates some in MAHA movement : NPR

The list of grievances with the EPA is long and includes the agency moving to roll back drinking water standards for PFAS, or forever chemicals, and weakening protections against air pollutants like mercury, arsenic, ethylene oxide and more. It's OK'd pesticides and insecticides with known health risks and on the carcinogen formaldehyde proposed there's a safe level of exposure for humans. Alexandra Munoz, who has a Ph.D. in toxicology, advocates alongside many in the MAHA coalition on issues like pesticides...

EPA flags microplastics, pharmaceuticals as contaminants in drinking water : NPR

Their inclusion on the list gives local regulators a tool to evaluate risks in their water supply, the EPA says, and it can set the stage for more research and regulatory action — but doesn't actually guarantee that will happen...

PFAS in pregnant women’s drinking water puts their babies at higher risk, study finds

When pregnant women drink water that comes from wells downstream of sites contaminated with PFAS, known as "forever chemicals," the risks to their babies' health substantially increase, a new study found. These risks include the chance of low birth weight, preterm birth and infant mortality.

Even more troubling, our team of economic researchers and hydrologists found that PFAS exposure increases the likelihood of extremely low-weight and extremely preterm births, which are strongly associated with lifelong health challenges…

Drinking water contaminated with Pfas probably increases risk of infant mortality, study finds

The first-of-its-kind University of Arizona research found drinking well water down gradient from a Pfas-contaminated site was tied to an increase in infant mortality of 191%, pre-term birth of 20%, and low-weight birth of 43%.

It was also tied to an increase in extremely premature birth and extremely low-weight birth by 168% and 180%, respectively...

RFK Jr. wants fluoride out of water. Oregon is way ahead. - The Washington Post

Fluoride proponents point to evidence in Calgary, Canada, and Juneau, Alaska, where dental problems rose last decade after fluoride was removed. Anecdotally, pro-fluoride Oregon dentists say they can easily spot whether patients grew up with fluoride when they lie back and open their mouths; those with the most cavities often grew up in Portland or other communities without fluoridated water...

Public schools across the country plagued by high lead levels in drinking water - ABC News

"This is 21st century Jim Crow, 40 miles from New York City," NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman told ABC News, comparing East Ramapo to Flint, a predominantly Black community.

"What went on in Flint was that people were put at risk," Lieberman said. "What's going on in East Ramapo is that children are being put at risk because they're going to school. And that's comparable. It is not exactly the same, but it is comparable."…

‘These levels are crazy’: Louisiana tap water sees huge spike in toxic chemicals

Since early summer, the combination of drought and rising sea levels has helped drag salty water from the ocean up the Mississippi River. The high levels of saltwater have made much of the region's water undrinkable. But public health experts have also voiced worries that the saltwater intrusion could, over time, corrode the region's ageing water infrastructure, leach heavy metals into the drinking water and create other knock-on problems...

‘Everything out the faucet is salt’: Louisianans struggle as drinking water crisis persists

During a year of extreme weather, which has seen record heat and wildfiresin Louisiana, it is drought in America's midwest that has caused the latest climate-related disaster here. As freshwater flowing down the Mississippi River falls to dangerous lows, saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico has pushed up into the channel, winding its way into public intake facilities and people's homes – making their drinking water unusable, damaging appliances and threatening to corrode ageing infrastructure...

Supreme Court Limits EPA’s Power to Address Water Pollution - The New York Times

Experts said the decision would sharply undercut the agency's authority to protect millions of acres of wetlands under the Clean Water Act, leaving them subject to pollution without penalty...

Sierra Club Statement on Sackett v. EPA Supreme Court Ruling

"The Supreme Court's ruling in Sackett v. EPA is profoundly wrong and directly at odds with the statute Congress enacted 50 years ago – a statute the public supported then, and continues to support today. Access to clean, safe, reliable water is a fundamental human right, and it is deeply disappointing that the Court has sided with polluters and the industry to roll back the clock on clean water protections. As a result of this decision, millions of Americans will have less safe drinking water than the generation before them…"

Trump appointees interfered to weaken EPA assessment of toxic chemical

The controversy centered around a 2021 toxicity report for PFBS, a type of PFAS compound that is toxic at low levels. Research has linked the chemical to kidney disease, reproductive problems and thyroid damage, and it has been found throughout the environment, including in an estimated 860,000 Americans' drinking water...
