David P. Barash says "the soul is due for a takedown" | Freethought Radio: In Studio (YouTube)

FFRF Co-Presidents Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor sit down with evolutionary biologist and psychologist David P. Barash to tackle one of religion’s most enduring claims: the human soul. Drawing from his book "The Soul Delusion," Barash breaks down what people mean when they talk about souls, why the concept persists, and how science explains consciousness without invoking the supernatural.

“The Bait-and-Switch” (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast) It’s in the Code ep 140

Practitioners of high-control Christianity present the “core” teachings of the tradition as being about God’s unconditional love and acceptance of human beings.

This is the “public-facing” presentation of high-control Christianity. But when we take a deeper look within high-control Christianity, we encounter a bait-and-switch. This accepting, affirming Christian vision is replaced by one focused on obligation structured around emotions like fear and guilt.

How does this take place? And how does this serve the purposes of high-control Christianity? Take a listen to this week’s episode to find out!

“Are you mad at God?” (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast) (It's in the Code, episode #138)

“Are you mad at God?”

This is a question that will almost certainly be posed to anyone undergoing faith deconstruction.

It might come from someone who means well and who cares about the person deconstructing. Or it might come from a partisan advocate of high-control religion.

What is happening when someone poses this question? Even if it comes from a place of care, how does it express the dynamics of high-control religion?

And why, if it’s a question, does it so often feel like an attack, like a dismissal?

Check out this week’s episode to hear Dan’s reflections on these and other issues related to this question.

“Why Can’t I Just…” (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast) (It's in the Code, Episode #133)

The sex/gender ideology structuring high-control American Christianity often has devastating effects on those who come out of it. This is true for those who accept theses teachings and carry them out in their own lives, and also for those who come to reject these teachings and attempt to leave them behind.

For many of these people, these teachings lead to lasting sexual dysfunction and frustration, undermining attempts to enter into meaningful sexual relationships with others.

Why is this? How do we explain it? And why do these effects persist both for people who accept this ideology and for those who reject it? Listen to this week’s episode as Dan explains.

Republicans say Trump didn’t try to overturn 2020 election - The Washington Post

The poll asked people whether Trump was "involved in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia." He, of course, was. Myriad pieces of evidence make that abundantly clear. We have a literal recording of him asking Georgia's secretary of state to "find" just enough votes to overcome his deficit, and Trump on the call explicitly cited "flipping" the results in the state.

But to most Republicans, this apparently never happened. Just 18 percent in the YouGov poll said Trump was involved in trying to overturn Georgia's results, compared to 59 percent who say he wasn't...

Florida Legislature passes bill that limits how schools and workplaces teach about race and identity - The Washington Post

"Is it possible to talk about slavery, or the fact that White people not Black people were enslavers," Gibson asked. "How does that conversation go so nobody feels or has the imposition of guilt or compelled to feel guilty?"

In this video I critique Pastor/Preacher Charles Lawson on his message of the horror of HE double hockey sticks, and compare and contrast with Pastor/Preacher Francis Chan and Rabbi Tovia Singer. I also highlight how Pascal's wager can be used against the Christian position....

Republicans have surrendered on Trump's guilt. They're making a last stand with 'So what if he did?'

Reporting on whether Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has secured enough support to shut down the possibility of witnesses in the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump is all over the map. Some reports have insisted that “10 or 12” Republicans are actually looking fearfully at the overwhelming public opinion in favor of witnesses, while other reports have been just as insistent that McConnell has waved enough head-pikes to successfully keep rebellion clear of dastardly facts. https://www.dailykos.com/story/2020/1/29/1914859/-Republicans-have-surrendered-on-Trump-s-guilt-they-re-making-a-last-stand-with-So-what-if-he-did
