What the Hell? (Part 2) (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast) It's In the Code 206

Can God be perfectly good and perfectly just and still send people to hell? What’s at stake with questions like these? How do adherents of high-control religion respond to questions like these? Check out this week’s episode to hear Dan’s discussion of why the doctrine of hell fundamentally calls God’s goodness and justice into question.

What the Hell? (Part I) (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast) It's In the Code Ep. 205

The idea of “hell” is a central focus within conservative, high-control Christianity (with analogues in some other traditions as well). But what, exactly, is the teaching concerning hell? And where does it come from? Does the Bible actually teach what religious conservatives say it does about hell? If not, why do they teach it? Why is hell so central to their understanding of Christianity? And what happens if we ask uncomfortable questions about hell? Join Dan for this week’s episode to find out!

What Draws People to Christian Nationalism? An Interview with Jeremie Beller (Warren Throckmorton; The Christian Past That Wasn’t: Formerly Telling Jefferson Lies podcast)

"In my book The Christian Past That Wasn't (Broadleaf Books), I spend two chapters on the factors that make Christian nationalism attractive.

In this segment, I interview Dean of Oklahoma Christian University's College of Bible, Jeremie Beller on the subject of terror management.

This theory provides a powerful, research-based account of what makes nationalism attractive to people.
Jeremie's theological expertise provides a novel perspective on the application of terror management to Christian nationalism. I go into this topic in depth in chapter one of the new book.

Chapter two discusses the role of deception by Christian organizations and how ingroup bias keeps people loyal to the overall group goals despite the deception. To order the book go to www.christianpast.com."

Angels in Chains (Dan McClellan and Dan Beecher; Data Over Dogma podcast on YouTube)

This episode we're talking about something that is in your Bible... but isn't. Multiple books of the New Testament make explicit references to this, and even quote it, but because first Enoch didn't make the canonical cut (with one exception), most readers would never know it. And yet, the idea that certain angels got chained up seems to be out there.

So who were these naughty angels? What did they do that was so bad that they deserved to be chained up? What kind of chains can even hold a divine being? And should we all be worried whenever the Euphrates river goes through a dry spell?
