Congress clears funding patch to avert pre-election shutdown - POLITICO

Trump is expected to sign the funding patch, which the White House endorsed last month ahead of Senate passage — even though it blocks the Office of Management and Budget from finalizing its controversial rule to overhaul the federal grantmaking approval process.

That Senate-added language, as well as a prohibition on new funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol, drove significant support from House Democrats...

States face massive new costs under Trump budget cuts - The Washington Post

Unlike the federal government, states must balance their budgets each year. That means deep cuts and changes to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will require state legislatures and governors to cope with hundreds of millions of dollars in new costs each year.

Some states are implementing cuts in anticipation of the added costs and responsibilities they will have to take on. Critics of the Trump legislation warn that projects — road and benefits programs, among others — are almost certain to be scaled back in coming years.

"There's not a single state that has the resources to make up for this. You cannot backfill it," Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said in an interview. "The federal government is now literally saying to the states, 'You are now on your own.'"…

Schumer says no to Republican funding bill as US shutdown risk intensifies

Republicans' "defunding bill is going to wreak havoc on working families", Katherine Clark, the House Democratic whip, told reporters on Wednesday, assailing cuts that she said could result in domestic violence survivors being evicted and less funding for Alzheimer's prevention research.

"Whether it's born out of cruelty, cowardice or corruption are all three, the GOP is hell bent on making families at home unsafe," she added...

House Democrats whip "NO" on GOP plan to avoid government shutdown

Government shutdown looms as Trump asserts new spending powers - The Washington Post

Trump and advisers including budget chief Russell Vought have argued that the president has the power to withhold money that Congress orders spent, arguing that a post-Watergate law that limits that power is unconstitutional. Musk's DOGE team has been unilaterally terminating contracts and pushing to shed federal staff.

Now Democrats say they want assurances from congressional Republican and the White House that the administration will actually spend the money included in any new law preventing a shutdown.

"Money is just being pilfered. They're stealing funds that are supposed to go to American families and businesses," said Rep. Rosa DeLauro (Connecticut), the House Democrats' chief negotiator…

Trump can’t fulfil his promise to fix the economy, so he’s blaming workers instead | Malaika Jabali | The Guardian

While Trump hasn't fulfilled his campaign promise, he is living up to his usual brand of politics: the blame game. And this blame, as usual, is rooted in generating anger against "undeserving" Americans. Trump pits immigrants against other working people.

This time, the undeserving are federal workers and poor people who get nominal benefits from the federal government – like Snap, which administers food stamps, and Medicaid. To fix so-called waste, the president apparently has no choice but to crack down on spending (and enlist help from Elon Musk), an issue that barely registered in the public consciousness in the past 10 years but is somehow now a rampant problem, according to Trump...

Democrats reject Johnson’s finger-pointing: ‘Full of s---’

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), the ranking member of the Rules Committee … said Johnson is struggling to reach a spending agreement because he's waiting for marching orders from President Trump and Elon Musk, the billionaire Trump ally who's heading the administration's cost-cutting efforts.

"First of all, he's full of s‑‑‑. He's a liar. And he's a total shill for Donald Trump and Elon Musk," McGovern said.

"So he can blame anybody he wants … but we're not walking away from the table," McGovern continued. "They're not interested in hearing from us at this particular point. Maybe they will be in March."…

Congress vote passes $1.2tn spending package to avert government shutdown

"The far-right elements who forced this dysfunction claim to care a lot about fiscal responsibility, but the constant chaos that they create is the opposite of fiscal responsibility," Murray said. "Working together, focusing on solutions, solving problems for people back home: that is the responsible way to get things done."…

Government avoids closure after Senate approves $460bn in spending

"To folks who worry that divided government means nothing ever gets done, this bipartisan package says otherwise," said the senate majority leader Chuck Schumer. He said the bill's passage would allow for the hiring of more air traffic controllers and rail safety inspectors, give federal firefighters a raise and boost support for unhoused veterans, among other things…

A Trump judge could shut down the federal government in Texas v. Garland - Vox

But the case is a window into Paxton's broader litigation strategy, where he frequently raises weak legal arguments undercutting federal policies before right-wing judges that he has personally chosen because of their ideology. And these judges often do sow chaos throughout the government, which can last months or longer, before a higher court steps in...
