Congress clears funding patch to avert pre-election shutdown - POLITICO

Trump is expected to sign the funding patch, which the White House endorsed last month ahead of Senate passage — even though it blocks the Office of Management and Budget from finalizing its controversial rule to overhaul the federal grantmaking approval process.

That Senate-added language, as well as a prohibition on new funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol, drove significant support from House Democrats...

Government shutdown draws near as Democrats push for healthcare funding

"We will not support a partisan spending agreement that continues to rip away healthcare from the American people, period, full stop," said Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader.

In an interview with Fox News on Friday morning, Trump insisted that Republicans should go it alone on spending – a tall ask because Democrats can use the Senate's filibuster to block legislation in the upper chamber.

"They want to give away money to this and then that, destroy the country. If you gave them every dream, they would not vote for it," Trump said of the Democrats. He said he had told Republicans: "Don't even bother dealing with them."…

Trump bill to cause most harm to America’s poorest

With their eagerness to cut the social safety net, Republicans seem to be treating millions of Americans who earn less than $50,000 as undeserving takers. "People earning under $50,000 are major targets of the Republican agenda. Their health coverage is targeted. Their food security is targeted," said Marr. "They are left out of key provisions expanding tax cuts, like the child tax credit. They are most at risk from the Republican tariffs. They'll be hurt across the board."

Marr said the budget bill treats "these people very harshly".

"It's the harshest bill we've ever seen since budget deficits became an issue 40 years ago," he said. "This is the first bill that simultaneously targets programs for poor people and working-class people to pay for it, and then takes that money to pay for tax cuts for very wealthy people. It makes poor and working-class people worse off. That's not been done before."…

Senate parliamentarian deals another blow to GOP megabill as Trump's July 4 deadline looms

In another blow to the bill, McDonough threw out a provision that would have allowed states to carry out border security and immigration enforcement — duties that traditionally have belonged to the federal government.

The latest rulings are part of a series of setbacks for the bill in the Senate. In recent days, the parliamentarian also rejected Republicans' attempts to gut the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and to slash food aid.…

Senate Republicans Unveil Key Part Of Their 'Big Beautiful Bill' | HuffPost Latest News

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has said he thought the House provision was too strict, and that it would harm rural hospitals in Missouri. The Senate proposal is even stricter than the House version. "I'm very concerned about the effect on rural hospitals," Hawley said last week.

"What I've said to my leadership is — and this is what I talked to the president about — is that I don't want to see rural hospitals close. So that's my bottom line."…

Republicans seek major ObamaCare rollback in House bill

"They just don't want to admit it. And the reality is, they use very clever code in order to cut benefits," Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) told reporters during a briefing Monday. "Senate Republicans need to know that cutting health care is a death sentence for their constituents, and we're going to be making that case across the land." …

Loan plan in Republican bill could worsen doctor shortage, experts warn | US healthcare | The Guardian

"I, along with many others, worry that these changes will make medical school unaffordable, turn loan repayment into a pipe dream for residents, and worsen physician shortages – especially in primary care and underserved areas," wrote recent medical school graduate Kaley Parchinski in a Stat editorial...

A hidden measure in the Republican budget bill would crown Trump king | Robert Reich | The Guardian

"Without the contempt power, judicial orders are meaningless and can be ignored. There is no way to understand this except as a way to keep the Trump administration from being restrained when it violates the Constitution or otherwise breaks the law …"

NRCC tells Republicans to ‘go on offense’ messaging Trump agenda bill

"This bill prevents tax increases to put more money in every American's pocket," the NRCC memo says, adding that it is "protecting Medicaid by removing illegal immigrants and eliminating fraud" and "investing billions of dollars to build the wall and secure the border."

The six-page memo …summarized the strategy in three bullet points: "Go on offense," "Keep the message simple," and "Tie Democrats to tax hikes, handouts for illegal immigrants, and protecting fraud."

"The One Big, Beautiful Bill is more than a messaging opportunity; it's a midterm roadmap," the memo says. It later asserts that rather than a vote for the bill being a liability, Democrats' votes against the bill "just provided us a Midterm sledgehammer."…
