Pam Bondi’s in trouble with Republicans on Capitol Hill - POLITICO

In a news conference Thursday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Bondi and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller — an architect of the Trump administration's aggressive immigration enforcement agenda — have "got to go."

"We're going to approach those two toxic individuals with the same intensity that has now led to the termination of Kristi Noem," Jeffries added…

Jeffries slams Republican DHS offer as ‘woefully inadequate’ - Live Updates - POLITICO

Jeffries said the Republican offer did not satisfactorily address a need for judicial warrants, detention center standards, independent investigations and excessive-force standards. Asked about whether the Trump administration would support a prohibition on masks for federal agents, Jeffries said, "That's an open question."…

Republicans argue ‘big-hearted president’ Trump is keen to end shutdown

Instead of authorising use of the contingency funds, Trump has instead exhorted fellow Republican senators to break the impasse by ending the Senate filibuster. The mechanism requires 60 votes in the 100-vote chamber for most kinds of legislation – including an end to the shutdown – to pass.

The House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries accused Trump on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday of "weaponising hunger". He said that the funds exist to continue food assistance benefits through November.

Without mentioning by name the president's $300m ballroom construction project, Jeffries added that Trump and his administration can find funding "for other projects, but somehow they can't find money to make sure that Americans don't go hungry"…

Trump-pardoned Jan. 6 rioter arrested for allegedly threatening to kill Jeffries - POLITICO

Christopher Moynihan, who was among a small group of Jan. 6 rioters convicted for breaching the Senate floor and rifling through senators' desks, was arrested by New York State Police after a "thorough investigation," which authorities say began with an anonymous tip to the FBI.

Court records reflect that the FBI's tipster told the bureau that on Oct. 17, Moynihan "made statements regarding the assassination of Congressman Hakeem Jeffries" and that he planned to carry out the attack "in a few days," while the Democratic House leader was in New York. The person told the FBI that Moynihan described the motivation for the plot as "the future" and voiced concern that the man given clemency by Trump had been abusing drugs and expressing increasing "homicidal ideations."…

Hakeem Jeffries called Trump’s deepfake post ‘racist.’ JD Vance said it was ‘funny.’ - POLITICO

After meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries this week, the president posted a video depicting the two Democrats speaking to reporters with fake audio of Schumer saying Democrats "have no voters anymore, because of our woke, trans bullshit" and that "if we give all these illegal aliens health care, we might be able to get them on our side so they can vote for us."

The crude memes are a reference to a Republican shutdown talking point — that Democrats are fighting to reverse health care provisions enacted in the GOP tax and domestic policy law earlier this year, including provisions aimed at excluding noncitizens from public benefits. Federal law already makes most undocumented immigrants ineligible for federal health coverage under Medicare, Medicaid and Affordable Care Act subsidies...

Trump talks with Democrats fail to yield breakthrough as US shutdown nears

The party has refused to support the GOP funding proposal unless it includes an extension of subsidies for Affordable Care Act (ACA) health plans, which expire at the end of the year. They also want the undoing of cuts to Medicaid – the program providing healthcare to poor and disabled Americans – and public media, which Republicans approved earlier in the year.

Schumer signaled that the Democrats may be willing to compromise. Outside the White House, he said Trump was "the decision-maker, and if he will accept some of the things we ask, which we think the American people are for, on healthcare and on rescissions, he can avoid a shutdown, but there are still large differences between us".

Trump to meet with US congressional leaders in last-ditch effort to avoid shutdown

Schumer, talking to NBC's Meet the Press, said he was "hopeful we can get something real done" – but was uncertain of the mood they would find Trump in when they sat down for the 2pm ET discourse.

"If the president at this meeting is going to rant, and just yell at Democrats, and talk about all his alleged grievances, and say this, that, and the other thing, we won't get anything done," Schumer said.

"We don't want a shutdown. We hope that they sit down and have a serious negotiation with us."

According to CBS News on Sunday, meanwhile, Trump is not hopeful the meeting will lead to an agreement…

Costa said: "Inside the White House, sources are saying president Trump actually welcomes a shutdown in the sense that he believes he can wield executive power to get rid of what he calls waste, fraud and abuse."…
