Bar pregnant foreigners from entering U.S.? Trump allies considering all options after Supreme Court defeat. - POLITICO

“Under current law, pregnant women can be barred from entry, and the president can do that under 212(f), again existing law,” said Ken Cuccinelli, who served as the deputy DHS secretary during Trump’s first term. “The State Department can bar those visas, and CBP can bar entry for those folks if the president chooses to do that.”… “

You’re not going on vacation, in an emergency, in late-term pregnancy. Those are some issues we can look at,” he said. “Because at the end of the day, it is national security.”..

Michigan group spotlights Black Maternal Health Week and the risks Black women face giving birth

Danielle Atkinson, the executive director of the public policy-focused group Mothering Justice, pointed to federal data that show Black women are 3-4 times more likely than their white counterparts to die of childbirth-related complications — a disparity that persists even when factoring in things like education and income level.

“It really speaks to the barriers, the economic barriers, the racial issues in our healthcare system and society, and how they have an effect on the lives of our people who are birthing,” Atkinson said...

Teen birth rates hit another historical low in 2025, CDC says : NPR

Florida Courts Ordered Them to Have C-Sections — ProPublica

The similarities in their cases were striking. Both women had three prior C-sections. They had questioned the need for their previous surgeries and arrived prepared to fight for vaginal births. And both women are Black.

They had argued that compelling them to have C-sections violated their rights to make medical decisions. Hospital staff said their medical decisions threatened the health of the fetus. It would be up to the courts to decide which one mattered more…

5 ProPublica Investigations Sparking Change in February — ProPublica

The new mandated training for any doctor providing obstetric care goes over nine case studies for physicians where abortion is considered legal to protect the life of the patient. Some of the scenarios in the training are similar to instances ProPublica investigated, such as miscarriages where a patient's water breaks before term but there is still a fetal heartbeat or when someone is experiencing complications from an incomplete abortion.

ProPublica's reporting has shown that pregnancy became far more dangerous in the state after the law took effect: Sepsis rates spiked for women suffering a pregnancy loss, as did emergency room visits in which miscarrying patients needed a blood transfusion; at least four women in the state died after they didn't receive timely reproductive care. More than a hundred OB-GYNs said the state's abortion ban was to blame…

Judges decry treatment of nursing and pregnant detainees in ICE custody - POLITICO

A Myanmar refugee, with a nursing five-month-old at home, whisked abruptly to Texas by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. A Massachusetts woman in her third trimester, held under ICE's guard at a hospital after experiencing medical distress in ICE detention. An Indian national who is three months pregnant and whose weight dropped to 90 pounds while in an ICE facility.

Federal judges are sounding alarms about the Trump administration's treatment of pregnant and nursing detainees in ICE custody — and the administration has given the courts conflicting, unclear answers about whether it is following its own policies that sharply restrict those detentions…

PFAS in pregnant women’s drinking water puts their babies at higher risk, study finds

When pregnant women drink water that comes from wells downstream of sites contaminated with PFAS, known as "forever chemicals," the risks to their babies' health substantially increase, a new study found. These risks include the chance of low birth weight, preterm birth and infant mortality.

Even more troubling, our team of economic researchers and hydrologists found that PFAS exposure increases the likelihood of extremely low-weight and extremely preterm births, which are strongly associated with lifelong health challenges…
