What did ICE deployments cost American cities? : NPR

What unifies these ICE actions is they were all sustained over several weeks, in communities where local law enforcement isn't authorized to assist with federal immigration efforts. Still, these deployments resulted in knock-on effects that required the use of local police to bring about or preserve order.

Police overtime surged as departments were forced to deploy officers for demonstrations, extra patrols, security around federal facilities and emergency responses tied to the raids — often at overtime pay rates...

Opinion | Trump to cities: Drop dead - The Washington Post

I had a nice, quiet Labor Day weekend. My family spent a day with friends at the Jersey Shore, but the rest of the time we were in New York City, where I live. We played tennis in Central Park; ate delicious Laotian food at a trendy restaurant in Tribeca and equally delicious Israeli food at a restaurant on the Upper West Side; bought bagels and lox from Zabar’s, the venerable Jewish grocery; and drank iced lattes from Irving Farm, a hip coffee shop. As I walked around, I noted the normal bustle of the city — the only discordant element being the masks that everyone wears to stay safe.....

Next COVID casualty: Cities hit hard by the pandemic face bankruptcy

U.S. cities are fast running out of cash. The pandemic will reduce local government revenues by an estimated US$11.6 billion in 2020. With COVID-19 requiring residents to stay home and stores to shutter, the bulk of this reduction comes from a slump in local sales taxes. Declines will continue into 2021.

Trump keeps claiming that the most dangerous cities in America are all run by Democrats. They aren’t. - The Washington Post

With the economy hobbled by the coronavirus pandemic and protesters in the streets targeting America’s systemic racism, President Trump has been forced to revise his reelection strategy. What was once going to be a triumphal declaration of his effectiveness at keeping the economy afloat has been reworked as a reiteration of his 2016 run: a focus on making America great and, more specifically, on law and order. Over and over, Trump has shared that terse phrase with his tens of millions of Twitter followers, including on Wednesday and Thursday. And over and over, he has tried to imply that Democrats broadly and former vice president Joe Biden specifically are soft on crime. That his likely general election opponent and other leaders in the Democratic Party are happy to have social structures collapse into anarchy for some unclear reason. To make that case, Trump has repeatedly lifted up a statistical factoid, as he did during an event at the White House on Wednesday. ...

The Trump campaign has over $1 million in outstanding bills from American cities - The Washington Post

Albuquerque has joined a lengthy list of U.S. cities with a simple request: that President Trump’s campaign pay for the costs incurred during a rally. On Wednesday, the Albuquerque Journal reported that the city sent an invoice to Trump’s reelection campaign in an effort to recoup more than $211,000 in expenses from a September rally. That figure includes more than $71,000 in police overtime. ....

Trump casts U.S. cities as dangerous wastelands to sway 2020 voters - The Washington Post

In President Trump’s telling, some of the United States’ largest and most iconic cities are dangerous wastelands plagued by crime, homelessness, filth and decay. The president’s increasing attacks on cities — often based on false or exaggerated information — come as his reelection campaign is seeking to brand Democrats running for president as extremists who will export liberal urban policies to the rest of the country.....

Republican Senate candidate's spokesman called majority-black cities 'shitholes'

So about that whole "civility" thing: How does this fit? In Atlantic City, residents feel injustice of climate change

When global warming leads to coastal flooding, low-income neighborhoods can suffer some of the worst effects. One stark example is in Atlantic City, where people living in houses built on low-lying lands were left out of flood-mitigation projects that benefit their wealthy neighbors. John Upton, who reported on the disparity for Climate Central, joins Hari Sreenivasan....
