Trump’s call to reduce US troops in Germany shocks Pentagon - POLITICO

While previous threats from Trump have not come to fruition, he’s ratcheted up his anti-European rhetoric in his second term, from threatening to pull out of NATO due to allies’ failure to join the Iran war to warning he might seize Greenland.

Trump’s latest threat to the transatlantic alliance comes just days after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the U.S. was being “humiliated” by Iran at the negotiating table. Trump continued to launch broadsides against the German leader on Thursday, calling for Merz to “spend more time” on ending Russia’s war with Ukraine and solving European energy and immigration problems “and less time on interfering with those that are getting rid of the Iran Nuclear threat.”…

Trump debate claims about Germany, Nord Stream are wrong, says Berlin - The Washington Post

"You believe in things like, we're not going to frack, we're not going to take fossil fuel, we're not going to do things that are going make this country strong, whether you like it or not," Trump said Tuesday night, referring to Harris. "Germany tried that, and within one year, they were back to building normal energy plants."

Hours later, in an uncharacteristically direct statement, the German Foreign Ministry fact-checked Trump's claims on its English-language X account.

"Like it or not: Germany's energy system is fully operational, with more than 50% renewables," the ministry wrote. "And we are shutting down — not building — coal & nuclear plants. Coal will be off the grid by 2038 at the latest."…

Nazi Germany had admirers among American religious leaders – and white supremacy fueled their support

Instead, what most strongly differentiated Hitler's sympathizers in this era was their belief in white supremacy vis-a-vis African Americans. These groups published literature claiming that African Americans were physically and mentally inferior, and one wrote positively of the Ku Klux Klan. A Southern Baptist bishop wrote, "The Negro is not like the white man … there are striking differences physical and mental," going on to claim, "the white race … assumes its superiority in strength and capacity."…

Opinion | Holiday Charitable Giving Can Raise Thorny Questions - The New York Times

I began thinking about this after I received an email from a psychology professor, Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi, criticizing what he called "the capitalist system of charities in the U.S.A." He wrote that charities are "competing to the death for the same 50 cents."

"Thus," he went on, "hundreds of organizations fight hunger locally and nationally. When it comes to illnesses, there are thousands of organizations competing. This means a terrible waste of resources." He recommended that I look at Germany, where the government performs functions that charities perform in the United States...
