In response to the Vance’s remarks, El-Sayed countered Monday with his own definition of “evil.”
“Evil is ripping healthcare away from working people in exchange for tax breaks for billionaires. Evil is making people pay more for groceries and gas while pushing for trade wars and actual war. Evil is dividing people for your own gain. Evil is selling out your morals for a little bit of power.
“Michigan is better than being lectured to by sock puppets from Ohio and Florida. We understand what’s at stake, and Michiganders will show you at the ballot box this November when we send Mike Rogers packing,” El-Sayed said in a press release...
A New York Times fact check pointed out that the second part of Rogers’s “incendiary statement” was false: it was not El-Sayed, but one of his supporters, the Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, who once said that the US deserved 9/11, before retracting and apologizing for that statement seven years before he endorsed El-Sayed.
For his part, El-Sayed has clearly denounced the 9/11 attacks for years. In a recollection of that day written in 2021, El-Sayed wrote: “
I watched terrorists with names like mine attack my country in the name of my faith. Three thousand of my fellow Americans were killed in the craven terrorist attacks in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. The attack devastated me.”

Since Abdul El-Sayed’s win earlier this month to become the Democratic nominee for Michigan’s US Senate seat, the right has ramped up its attacks on him, condemning his past comments as evidence of him being a “terrorist” and “radical Islamist” or a “jihadist sympathizer” who is “infiltrating from within”. But it has also targeted El-Sayed’s family—including his wife, Sarah Jukaku, a psychiatrist, and his half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi, a writer and assistant professor at the University of Chicago...

El-Sayed says such attacks betray a weakness in those who launch them.
“We all pray for the same things. ... We want what’s good for our kids and our families,” he told MS NOW after his primary victory. “They're going to use Islamophobia, because their ideas are tired.”…
El-Sayed campaign spokesperson Roxie Richner did not comment on the GOP’s anti-American rhetoric but pointed out that El-Sayed is a Rhodes Scholar and former public health official “who has built a broad and growing coalition around getting money out of politics, money back in pockets, and guaranteeing healthcare through Medicare for All.”
She cast Rogers as “an extreme Republican who supported banning abortion, helped architect the opioid epidemic which has killed thousands of Americans, and wants to cut Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid to make healthcare even more expensive.”…

Influencer and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker said “America deserved 9/11” in a 2019 livestream, and later walked back the comment.
Abdul El-Sayed campaigned with Piker in April. El-Sayed said in an interview just before the campaign events that he does not believe 9/11 was justified...
