State lawmakers find America’s medical debt problem ‘can no longer be ignored’ - POLITICO

"More and more state legislators are recognizing that … whether you are insured or not, you will likely at some point be dealing with medical debt."… 

Among the reasons for the flurry of action is a wave of media reports and constituent complaints about hospitals suing patients, putting liens on their homes, garnishing their wages or staking claim on their tax refunds… 

Nonprofit hospitals, which are exempt from most taxes in exchange for providing free or discounted care to those in need, were behind 90 percent of those lawsuits, according to the report, which was released jointly with Duke University School of Law. 

"We are dealing with hospital CEOs who give the middle finger … to the IRS rules that say they are supposed to provide charity care equal to the tax benefit they receive," Folwell said.

Document Shows NRA Money Helped Its Chief Search for a Personal Mansion

The gun group's lawyer said "not a cent" of the nonprofit's money was spent on helping executive Wayne LaPierre's mansion search. A document we obtained shows that payments were flagged by internal accountants for doing just that.

Kentucky Officials Have Ended the $18 Million Tax Rebate Deal With Ark Encounter

This is a big deal. And you can read more of the back story here. Quick summary: The Creationists behind Ark Encounter initially said they were building a for-profit attraction in order to get a lot of perks, including a tourism-related tax rebate from the state of Kentucky worth more than $18 million over ten years. But after the city of Williamstown said they would add a 50-cent surcharge to all tickets to pay for a safety fee, Ken Ham‘s team sold Ark Encounter to their own non-profit, Crosswater Canyon, because religious ministries are exempt from that kind of tax....
