Secret systems used by Israel in mass killings of Gaza civilians revealed in new film

“It’s not just any collection of interviews,” Italy’s Cinecittà News quoted Barbera as saying. “It took them three years to convince these Israeli intelligence and military officials to share the work they did when the invasion of Gaza began, and I assure you, their testimonies are shocking.”…

The Fear of Black Greeks - The Atlantic

But Greece is not as far from Africa as the North American continent is, and the modern construct of race, a pseudoscientific product of the Atlantic slave trade, would not be invented until thousands of years after Homer. Black people are depicted in Greek art. Egypt, Libya, and “Aethiopia” are frequently referenced in ancient writings. As the Black classics scholar Frank Snowden Jr. wrote in the 1970s, at least one of the characters in The Odyssey, Eurybates, is specifically described as “black-skinned and woolly-haired.” As the Stanford classics professor Sarah Derbew notes in her book Untangling Blackness in Greek Antiquity, Black people are referenced in plays by Euripides, Sophocles, and Aeschylus. They also appear in the writings of Hesiod and Herodotus. One of the lost epic poems is The Aethiopis, in which Memnon, the Aethiopian king and an ally to Troy, plays a major role.

Black people were not as uncommon in the ancient Mediterranean world as Nolan’s critics seem to imagine. But even if they had been, color-blind casting makes sense as an artistic choice for portraying the classics precisely because race as it exists today did not exist when The Odyssey was written. And no contemporary actor can actually claim the same descent as Helen, who hatched from a swan’s egg…

Even its creator now admits that ‘2000 Mules’ is discredited - The Washington Post

Since the movie was released and its numerous flaws became apparent to objective observers, True the Vote and D'Souza have engaged in multiple rounds of finger-pointing. When D'Souza's accompanying book was pulled from shelves and allegations about specific nonprofit groups stripped out, True the Vote denied that it had been involved in identifying those organizations. Now D'Souza notes that his analyses "operated in good faith and in reliance on True the Vote."…

‘We create gods because the world is chaos’: Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow and Stanley Tucci on celebrity, sin and papal thriller Conclave

"… But at the end of our film, the group celebrates the person who seems to me to carry the spiritual depth and coherence and integrity that is needed. Going forward in the world now, we're very frightened of what might come at us because of what's happened. But we mustn't lose sight of the power of what we can have. We must keep intact our aspiration to an ideal..."

New film dives into threats of Christian nationalism to democracy

"I just could not believe the size and the scale of what was going on out there," Dan Partland, the film's director tells Axios. Partland said he was inspired to dive into the project after reading Katherine Stewart's 2020 book, "The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism."

He later recognized images of Christian nationalism on flags and slogans during the Jan. 6 insurrection...

Ted Cruz claims TV service’s diversity program is anti-white discrimination

A 2021 study by McKinsey & Company found that projects led by Black filmmakers are consistently underfunded and undervalued, and that the management ranks of the film and TV industries are disproportionately white. The study also found that the industries were losing out on billions of dollars a year because of racial inequities.

This points to a clear need for programs — like the Diversity Development Fund — that seek out and invest in nonwhite filmmakers. But if Cruz has his way, the Independent Television Service would be barred from doing so...

I grew up evangelical. Terrifying rapture films scarred me for ever

Rise of the Antichrist expertly weaves contemporary Christian right boogeymen (big pharma, Silicon Valley, mainstream media, Davos, the Covid vaccine, mental health experts) into an otherwise typical tale. It's the same narrative every time with rapture films, books and plays: the antichrist uses world war to manipulate the UN into installing him as leader of a global socialist government centered on the Mark of the Beast, a tattooed credit card – often a barcode bracketed by the numbers 666 – on everyone's right hand or forehead. Sorbo's film also skewers the "globalist mainstream media", which has supposedly conspired to use Covid, and now the rapture, to keep people indoors, distracted and afraid, all in the name of power and profit. It's a boldly ironic stance for this movie to take, considering it rests in a tradition of using questionable theology to terrify audiences – often children and teens – resulting in lucrative bestsellers and a motivated voting base...

‘I hope this triggers outrage’: surprise Brett Kavanaugh documentary premieres at Sundance | Sundance 2023 | The Guardian

"I do hope this triggers outrage," said producer Amy Herdy in a Q&A after the premiere in Park City, Utah. "I do hope that this triggers action, I do hope that this triggers additional investigation with real subpoena powers."

The film provides a timeline of the allegations, initially that Kavanaugh was accused by Christine Blasey Ford of sexual assault when she was 15 and he 17. She alleged that he held her down on a bed and groped her, and tried to rip her clothes off before she got away. Kavanaugh was also accused of sexual misconduct by Deborah Ramirez, who alleged that he exposed himself and thrust his penis at her face without her consent at a college party.

Kavanaugh denies the allegations. He turned down requests to take part in the documentary...

Enabling a demagogue: a new film traces Republicans’ capitulation to Donald Trump | Republicans | The Guardian

"There's never been a film I made where I was more anxious, unhappy to make it, unwilling to discover the things we were discovering," Kirk, 74, says of his latest project for PBS's investigative series Frontline. "'Worried' is not a strong enough word for how I feel about where we are as a country and I don't think I'm alone."

The problem(s) with Trump’s pushback against the Jan. 6 probe

…The Associated Press said the film is burdened by "gaping holes"; Washington Post analyses characterized its findings as "dishonest" and "misleading"; The Daily Beast said the movie is "stupid"; and Bulwark found it to be so bad that it's unintentionally "hilarious."
The Bulwark's piece added that "2000 Mules" is a "tour de force exploring the limits of how many suckers there are willing to pay for fantasy."…
