Opinion | Black History Is a Casualty in Ron DeSantis’s Christian Nationalist Quest - The New York Times

In the same way that Donald Trump made his bones as America's white nationalist in chief, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida is trying to make his as the country's chief Christian nationalist, a subset of white supremacy that holds that God has ordained America as a Christian nation, and that its ideals must be protected from the encroachment of pluralism — racial, religious or otherwise…

But Christian nationalism isn't merely "patriotic Christians" and it's not Christianity, but rather, as the University of Oklahoma sociologist Samuel Perry put it, can be understood as "an impostor Christianity that uses evangelical language to cloak ethnocentric and nationalist loyalties."…

Trump and the Republican party exemplify these five elements of fascism

By contrast, the ostensible goal of fascism is to strengthen society. Fascism's method of accomplishing this is to reward those who win economically and physically and to denigrate or exterminate those who lose. Fascism depends on organized bullying – a form of social Darwinism. For the fascist, war and violence are means of strengthening society by culling the weak and extolling heroic warriors.

'Birchers,' the history of a group that helped pave the road to Trump - The Washington Post

With "Birchers: How the John Birch Society Radicalized the American Right," Dallek joins a chorus of historians who have insisted, since Donald Trump's victory in 2016, that the contemporary Republican Party, with its nationalist, isolationist, nativist and conspiratorial inclinations, can be understood only by looking back to far-right mobilizations of earlier eras: to groups such as the Birchers, who were long considered too marginal and too extreme to have played a decisive role in shaping American conservatism, much less all of American politics. "More than any other far-right group, and more than the most hardline Goldwater, Nixon or Reagan Republicans," Dallek writes, "the Birch Society staked out a vigorous challenge to conservative orthodoxy and bequeathed to subsequent generations an extreme antigovernment zeal and rhetorically violent appeal."…

Opinion | Trump voters should be loving Joe Biden - The Washington Post

… Trump voters weren't attracted to him because of his policies but because of tribal partisanship and because they liked Trump's style: his attacks on institutions, government-by-tweet, the violent talk and, yes, the white nationalism. Conversely, Democratic voters support Biden despite many policy disappointments because he has brought calm and stability and isn't slashing away daily at the fabric of democracy.

Opinion | Trump’s New Civil Religion - The New York Times

... Make America Great Again is a politics of grievance complete with its own myths and symbols. Mr. Trump's rallies have been the ritual locus of his brand of nationalism. They create a collective effervescence in attendees that leaves them seething at their political enemies and ready to follow the president down any authoritarian road he takes them. Moreover, Andrew Whitehead and Samuel Perry have shown that Mr. Trump's religious support comes from Christian nationalists who believe the United States was built for and by white Christians...

Opinion | The pope’s unexpected election message - The Washington Post

We have become accustomed to interventions in U.S. political campaigns from religious leaders — including Catholic bishops and White evangelical preachers — who wholeheartedly recommend support for conservative political figures who oppose abortion and same-sex marriage. We are not accustomed to a hearing from a pope, a month before Election Day, who criticizes “myopic, extremist, resentful and aggressive nationalism,” and castigates those who, through their actions, cast immigrants as “less worthy, less important, less human.”....

Christian Nationalism with Andrew Whitehead & Samuel Perry

Christian Nationalism “is related to racism, but it’s not just racism, and it’s related to authoritarianism, but it’s not just authoritarianism,” Whitehead says on the show. “It’s related to xenophobia, but it’s not just reducible to that. And so it’s connected and it connects all of these other negative ideologies in this powerful way that we felt like we needed to unpack some more.”
