Outrage as Trump withdraws from key UN climate treaty along with dozens of international organisations

Donald Trump has sparked outrage by announcing the US will exit the foundational international agreement to address the climate crisis, cementing the US's utter isolation from the global effort to confront dangerously escalating temperatures.

In a presidential memorandum issued on Wednesday, Trump withdrew from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), along with 65 other organizations, agencies and commissions, calling them "contrary to the interests of the United States".…

Opinion | Donald Trump Doesn’t Have the Support of Corporate America - The New York Times

As such, it was hardly surprising that just as when Mr. Trump faced a chilly reaction from hundreds of top executives when he spoke at my Yale Chief Executive summit in 2005, he appeared to face a similarly frigid reception when he spoke to the Business Roundtable this month, with no noticeable applause at any point during his "remarkably meandering" remarks, according to CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin, and with Mr. Trump assuming a subdued, if not hostile, posture. Chief executives are not protectionist, isolationist or xenophobic, and they believe in investing where there is the rule of law, not the law of rulers...

Secret Russian foreign policy document urges action to weaken the U.S. - The Washington Post

The document for the first time provides official confirmation and codification of what many in the Moscow elite say has become a hybrid war against the West. Russia is seeking to subvert Western support for Ukraine and disrupt the domestic politics of the United States and European countries, through propaganda campaigns supporting isolationist and extremist policies, according to Kremlin documents previously reported on by The Post. It is also seeking to refashion geopolitics, drawing closer to China, Iran and North Korea in an attempt to shift the current balance of power...

'Birchers,' the history of a group that helped pave the road to Trump - The Washington Post

With "Birchers: How the John Birch Society Radicalized the American Right," Dallek joins a chorus of historians who have insisted, since Donald Trump's victory in 2016, that the contemporary Republican Party, with its nationalist, isolationist, nativist and conspiratorial inclinations, can be understood only by looking back to far-right mobilizations of earlier eras: to groups such as the Birchers, who were long considered too marginal and too extreme to have played a decisive role in shaping American conservatism, much less all of American politics. "More than any other far-right group, and more than the most hardline Goldwater, Nixon or Reagan Republicans," Dallek writes, "the Birch Society staked out a vigorous challenge to conservative orthodoxy and bequeathed to subsequent generations an extreme antigovernment zeal and rhetorically violent appeal."…

And then there were six ... what the rest of the world thinks of Donald Trump - Daily Kos

He came late. He pouted. He left early. Even converted into Latin, it wouldn't make for a stirring motto. But that didn't stop Donald Trump's surrogates from marching across the dial to spread the word that Trump was "forceful," that he presided over a "successful" G-7, and that he only called in from Air Force One to order an international takesy-backsy because he was "betrayed" by people who earned "a special place in hell" for crossing Trump. ....

Under Mr. Trump, America Surrenders - The New York Times

Americans have long struggled with the question of whether this country should be more involved in world affairs, or less. The contest of ideas between internationalists and isolationists has been particularly fierce among Republicans, going all the way back to Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft and continuing on to the beginning of World War II.

But since the end of that war, whatever the differences in their priorities and points of emphasis, every president has chosen engagement rather than retreat, sometimes with surprising and positive outcomes.....

Trump’s claim of ‘America first’ during his acceptance speech is terrifying

In the very first speech of his presidency, Donald Trump chanted the slogan of a 1940s isolationist and anti-Semitic organization that had been opposed to America’s entry into World War II. The newly minted president of the United States chanted “America first” twice during his inauguration speech, shortly after taking the oath of office on Friday....

The Most Fearsome Hawk of All: Donald Trump's Careless, Brutal Plans for the U.S. Put the World in Peril

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Salon published an important piece by David Niose about Donald Trump’s incipient fascism and what that reveals about American militarism. Let’s just say that his success is not likely a sign that we are headed toward a new kinder, gentler foreign policy.

Trump’s use of the term “America First” doesn’t harken back to pre-WWII isolationism as many people want to believe. He himself undoubtedly had no idea that it had that meaning when he said it, he just knew he’d heard it before. What he meant is “America will be Number One,” which isn’t the same thing at all....
