“What Do We Love When We Love God?” (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast) It's In the Code 200

How much love is enough? In this episode of It’s In the Code, part of the series “Questions I Wasn’t Supposed to Ask in Church,” we examine one of the most influential teachings in conservative Christianity: that Christians must love God or Jesus more than anyone and anything else. What happens when this teaching becomes an impossible demand? Drawing on a listener’s powerful experience, we explore the connection between the love of God, religious trauma, Christian deconstruction, and the damaging effects that toxic religious teachings can have on relationships with parents, children, partners, and family. For many people leaving high-control religion or evangelical Christianity, questions about how to love God—and whether loving God requires loving other people less—can become central to the process of religious deconstruction.

This episode also explores the history of Christian theology and the influence of Greek philosophy on Christian ideas about God, love, the body, the material world, mortality, and human relationships. Is loving God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength really the same thing as loving God more than everyone else? Can love of God and love of other people exist in harmony? And what if the things we love most are precisely the things that are finite, temporary, and mortal? This conversation about conservative Christianity, religious trauma, spiritual abuse, Christian deconstruction, and the meaning of love ultimately asks whether we need to rethink both love and God.

‘You unbelievable coward’: conservative US media in open warfare over Iran

The tension between Carlson and Levin traces back to at least June 2025, when Carlson accused Levin of "lobbying for war with Iran" during a private lunch with Trump at the White House. Levin called Carlson a "maggot", and Carlson referred to Levin as a "warmonger". He used the same label for another former Fox News colleague, Sean Hannity. (This week, Kelly called her former colleague Hannity "a supplicant to Donald Trump" and said "he would never say anything other than to puff Donald Trump up".)…

“Reigning In the Beast: Male Sexuality” (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast; It’s in the Code Ep 121)

Conservative, high-control American religion conceives of only two genders (male and female), and understands human sexuality as inherently heteronormative—women are sexually drawn to men, and men are sexually drawn to women.

But within this overarching understanding, men and women are perceived as expressing radically different sexualities. Within this world, how is male sexuality understood? What are its defining features? And what are the dangers that come with this way of perceiving male sexuality?

Take a listen as Dan offers his thoughts on these and other issues in this week’s episode.

The Radical Catholic Right from Paul Weyrich to JD Vance: Part 1 (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

In this episode, we dive into the influential role of Paul Weyrich, founder of the Heritage Foundation, and his impact on conservative Catholic involvement in American politics. Dr. Chelsea Ebin, author of The Radical Mind, helps unpack Weyrich’s reaction to Vatican II, his strategic efforts to unite conservative Catholics and Protestants, and his vision of integrating Catholic morality into the U.S. government.

We also explore how Weyrich’s legacy lives on through figures like Leonard Leo and the current political landscape. The conversation delves into the paradox of promoting ‘tradition’ through revolutionary means and what that means for modern American politics.

“God Needs Demons”: It's in the Code, Episode 103 (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

“Why so angry?”

That’s the question many people have when confronted by Christian and social conservatives who have different views on politics, religion, or policy than they do. We understand the differences. We understand that in a large, complex society there are bound to be significant differences. We understand that those differences can stir powerful emotions.

But the vitriol those conservatives aim at their political and social opponents still feels like it’s out of all proportion to the issues at hand and the task of living together.

In this episode, Dan reflects on this question, arguing that conservative Christian theology effectively demands that they demonize their opponents to justify what they view as God’s commands for society.

Conservative PragerU materials in U.S. classrooms draw criticism - The Washington Post

PragerU is not a university but a nonprofit that produces short videos that push patriotism and conservative views of history, race, sex and gender, among other topics. Since last year, Florida, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Montana and Arizona have also announced partnerships with PragerU under which the nonprofit's lessons become state-sanctioned, optional teaching materials for public schools. PragerU is neither paying nor receiving money from state partners, the nonprofit and state officials said...

The conservative juggernaut that’s quietly writing the majority out of US laws | The Hill

Think about this: If Americans are behind bars in private prisons where you live, you can probably thank ALEC for that. If there are laws that make it hard for Black and brown Americans to vote where you live, you can thank ALEC. If there are laws where you live that make it a crime to protest against polluters and climate change, thank ALEC. And more and more frequently in the post-Dobbs world, the same goes for laws that criminalize and curtail abortion rights…

How the SCOTUS 'Supermajority' is shaping policy on everything from abortion to guns ( Dave Davies; Fresh Air podcast)

Constitutional lawyer Michael Waldman says that there's an increasing distance between the American people and the Supreme Court. He points out that Democrats have won the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections, but Republican presidents have appointed six of the nine justices now on the Supreme Court.

"In a sense, the country is moving in one direction and, with this locked-in majority supermajority, the Court is moving fast in another direction," Waldman says.

Waldman is president of the Brennan Center for Justice at the NYU School of Law. His new book, The Supermajority: How the Supreme Court Divided America, reflects on the transformational changes wrought by the conservative supermajority, which now dominates the U.S. Supreme Court.

Waldman argues that the conservatives justices, including three appointees of President Trump, have defied longstanding precedents and rendered far-reaching decisions on gun control, reproductive rights, environmental regulations and voting rights — with more to come. He says that the principle of "originalism" — whereby conservative justices purport to govern according to the intent of the country's founders — is fundamentally flawed.

"We can't really pretend that we can know what to do now, today, in 2023, by asking what the guys in powdered wigs in 1791 thought," Waldman says. "This was a time when women could not vote for much of that time, when Black people were enslaved and so forth. It was a very different time with very different values and visions of what kind of country we were going to be."

Stand Up America Statement on Senator Tim Scott's Presidential Announcement

"Scott has long been a champion for right-wing causes. As Senator, Scott has voted in lockstep with the MAGA agenda – opposing key legislation like the John Lewis Voting Rights Actand the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act for gun safety legislation. Scott has also been a vocal supporter of tax cuts for billionaires and federal limits on reproductive justice. Despite his "moderate" persona, he remains a strong ally of Donald Trump and continues to perpetuate MAGA misinformation and vote against the interests of the American people..."
