Bankruptcies hit 15-year high in 2025 as tariffs roiled corporate America - The Washington Post

But in a shift from previous years, the rise in filings is most apparent among industrials — companies tied to manufacturing, construction and transportation. The sector has been hit hard by President Donald Trump's ever-fluid tariff policies — which he's long insisted would revive American manufacturing. The manufacturing sector lost more than 70,000 jobs in the one-year period ending in November, federal data shows…

What’s Stopping Companies From Bringing Manufacturing To The U.S.

Today, a little over 12.7 million Americans work in manufacturing. But in the 1970s, that number was nearly 20 million. Over the years, globalization and lowered trade barriers have resulted in cheaper labor abroad and closed factories in America.

But as President Trump pushes to revitalize manufacturing through tariff policy, economists and trade experts are divided on whether a manufacturing renaissance makes sense for the U.S., which has evolved to a service-based economy. Others say the benefits of onshoring go beyond price: shorter shipping times, better quality control, and supply chain agility, among other advantages.

To better understand the challenges and possibilities of bringing manufacturing back to the U.S., CNBC visited a Midwestern bike maker shifting its supply chain from China to the U.S.

‘Terrible fuel efficiency, no right-hand drive’: why trade deal won’t warm up Japan to American cars

US manufacturers like GM and Ford simply don't focus on the Japanese market, according to Miyao.

"They don't really do any marketing, and often don't even offer right-hand drive models. So the cars don't sell."

Size is also a problem, Miyao notes. The Ford F-150 pickup is around six metres long and 2 metres high. That kind of vehicular behemoth is particularly ill suited to Japan's narrow roads and tight parking spaces…

"Going back to the days when we first came across US cars like Cadillacs, they're seen as having terrible fuel efficiency and breaking down easily; that impression hasn't changed much," says Matsuyama…

‘This Could Get Much Uglier’: The Fatal Flaw in Trump’s Trade War - POLITICO

In the meantime, the domestic manufacturing sector is shrinking amid corporate paralysis. "

Manufacturers are putting these decisions on hold," said Jay Timmons, head of the National Association of Manufacturers, in a CNBC interview ahead of the tariff announcement. "They're waiting to see whether they should invest and hire. And that's not good for the economy."...

‘This Could Get Much Uglier’: The Fatal Flaw in Trump’s Trade War - POLITICO

"...I've asked multiple corporate executives in recent weeks whether companies are likely to start investing in manufacturing in the United States in response to Trump's policies, and the message has basically been: That's an unanswerable question right now. Because making those decisions requires understanding the relative costs of doing it versus not doing it, and Trump is far too unpredictable to allow for that kind of calculation…"

Biden calls Trump tariff approach 'a major mistake' - ABC News

Speaking of his own administration's actions, Biden touted its work in bringing manufacturing back to the United States, boosting production of semiconductor chips, lowering health care costs and making major investments in infrastructure.

Biden also praised his team's work to get inflation under control and raise wages, though he did acknowledge that "too many working- and middle-class families struggle with high prices for housing and groceries and daily needs of life," and he pointed to the pandemic and the war in Ukraine for driving up inflation.

Biden asked for his record to be compared to Trump's at the end of his successor's term…

Elon Musk and Donald Trump: A modern-day Teapot Dome scandal waiting to happen

"Congress should reject this self-dealing by Musk and focus instead on helping American manufacturers...

Elon Musk, the world's richest man, got that way in part due to federal government help. But after backing Trump, he has again changed his tune. "Take away the subsidies," he wrote on X, which he also owns. "It will only help Tesla. Remove subsidies from all industries!" …"

Opinion | Biden’s lasting legacy might be in private-sector investment - The Washington Post

"If you want an economic vision that inures most directly to the benefit of working and middle-class Americans, the Democrats' approach has unquestionably been superior. The proof will come in a few months, when Trump and his MAGA sycophants begin touting the very same economy they now disparage. Just remember that the massive growth, job creation and international advantages — including new infrastructure, manufacturing plants and jobs dotting red America — are the result of an agenda most Republicans — especially the MAGA set — railed against..."
