Touted as a "game changer" by former President Joe Biden, Michigan silicon chip manufacturer closing

SK Siltron spokesman Joe Guy Collier said the company originally expanded manufacturing in the U.S. to meet what was then growing customer demand for a specialized product used in electric vehicles.

“Significant changes in the EV market have created sustained challenges for the silicon carbide wafer business,” said Collier...

The Iran war is pushing some countries to move away from oil faster : NPR

Countries are forging a new energy path with renewable and electric vehicle technologies sourced from China. In March, Chinese exports of solar panels were up more than 80% compared to last year, according to energy think tank Ember. China exported more than 2 million electric passenger vehicles between January and May, with nearly half of those exports occurring in April and May, according to a recent analysis note from SIA Energy, an oil and gas consultancy.

"If China's car industry were handing out a salesman of the year award for 2026, President Trump would be a leading contender," the SIA Energy note says...

‘The only thing that terrifies me is BYD’: Politicians quake at Chinese EVs - POLITICO

Lawmakers have focused on national security concerns to dissuade Americans from fantasizing about Chinese vehicles they can’t buy. They also have championed protecting the nation’s industrial core and the jobs they represent, pointing to European struggles to save auto jobs from Chinese competitors...

Newsom’s silver lining in the bad EV numbers

California Air Resources Board officials, who are designing the program, say they want to make it as easy as possible for shoppers to walk into a dealership and use a rebate, which will likely be between $1,500 and $7,500…

Solar and EVs help countries weather energy crisis with Iran war : NPR

"The widespread adoption of solar and batteries kind of serves as a hedge or a protection sort of against these price shocks that the fossil fuel markets are very vulnerable to globally," she says.

Some countries in Latin America and Africa are still deciding between investing in traditional fossil fuel infrastructure or renewable energy and batteries. The growing energy crisis fueled by the war makes the stakes more clear, Bond says. " Once you've got your solar panel, there's no cost for the sun," he says. "But once you've got your gas fire power station, you have to pay every day for the gas that you burn in it."…

Michigan Lawsuit Calls Big Oil a “Cartel” That’s Driving High Energy Bills – Mother Jones

In a first-of-its-kind complaint, the state's attorney general, Dana Nessel, accused four fossil fuel majors and the top US oil lobbying group last month of acting as a "cartel" to stifle the growth of renewable energy and electric vehicles (EVs), while suppressing information about the dangers of the climate crisis. The conduct, the lawsuit alleged, violates federal and state antitrust laws.

The companies' "collusion" drove up Michigan utility costs and slowed the transition away from gas-powered cars, according to the filing. Absent the industry's efforts to repress clean technology, EVs "would be a common sight in every neighborhood—rolling off assembly lines in Flint, parked in driveways in Dearborn, charging outside grocery stores in Grand Rapids, and running quietly down Woodward Avenue," it said...

Electric cars go mainstream as adoption surges across rich and developing nations

Last year, almost every new car sold in Norway, the nature-loving country flush with oil wealth, was fully electric. In prosperous Denmark, which was all-in on petrol and diesel cars until just before Covid, sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reached a share of 68%. In California, the share of zero-emissions vehicles hit 20%. And at least every third new car now bought by the Dutch, Finns, Belgians and Swedes burns no fuel…

‘The Chinese will not pause’: Volvo and Polestar bosses urge EU to stick to 2035 petrol car ban

Volkswagen and BMW, Samuelsson says, "can do with they like", but if they take the foot off the electrification pedal, they will just widen the gap for China.

"The Chinese will set up factories in Hungary and Slovakia, Romania … in low labour cost markets. I don't think it's possible to keep them out of the EU with tariffs. You just need to meet them face on and compete with them," he says...

Why Trump Couldn’t Stop the Electric Vehicle Dream - POLITICO

Biden didn't get to campaign on the success of shiny new chargers at highway exits. But by insisting that EV drivers get the same plug-in and payment experience regardless of where they go, his administration did lay the groundwork for the EV revolution of tomorrow — even if he won't get credit for it.

NEVI "forced the entire industry to raise its game around reliability, redundancy and performance that will be remembered as an important legacy," said Nick Nigro, the founder of Atlas Public Policy, which studies the EV charging network...

Trump’s hatred for renewables means the US is falling behind the rest of the world

Rather than simply boost a fossil fuel industry that donated handsomely to his election campaign, Trump has set about obliterating clean energy projects: halting offshore windfarms that had already been approved, banning wind and solar from federal land, and eliminating subsidies for renewables and electric cars (while handing fresh taxpayer dollars to a seemingly futile effort to revive coal)...
