Kevin McCarthy shows his ignorance about American history in new video

"In his own odd way, McCarthy is recapitulating one of the central tenets of nineteenth century Manifest Destiny: that everyone wanted to be part of the US, so any US military action was not a hostile invasion but rather a liberation," Jacoby wrote. "President Polk and others in the 1840s, for example, spoke of taking 'bloodless possession' of California and New Mexico rather than admit that the U.S. seized these territories by force."

Correcting McCarthy's falsehoods is not just a matter of getting the historical record right. It's crucial to counter the way that many on the right — and some liberals — downplay or whitewash America's history of expansionism and imperialism in order to foster a dangerous brand of American chauvinism…

Pope Francis draws criticism for extolling Russian imperialist tsars | Reuters

"It is precisely with such imperialist propaganda, the 'spiritual ties' and the 'need' to save 'great Mother Russia' that the Kremlin justifies the killing of thousands of Ukrainians and the destruction of Ukrainian cities and villages," Oleg Nikolenko, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, said on Facebook.

"I'm the only one that matters": Trump's chilling imperial power-grab -- Salon

President Donald Trump is overseas right now, doing personal appearances at his properties and making a fool of himself. So far, he's asked Japanese car makers to start making cars in the United States, apparently ignorant of the fact that three out of four Japanese-branded cars and trucks are already manufactured in America. And he hawked U.S. military equipment as if he were selling Trump steaks on YouTube. That wasn't the worst of it. ....

Syria: Another Pipeline War - EcoWatch

The fossil fuel industry's business model is to externalize its costs by clawing in obscene subsidies and tax deductions—causing grave environmental costs, including toxic pollution and global warming. Among the other unassessed prices of the world's addiction to oil are social chaos, war, terror, the refugee crisis overseas, and the loss of democracy and civil rights abroad and at home.

As we focus on the rise of ISIS and search for the source of the savagery that took so many innocent lives in Paris and San Bernardino, we might want to look beyond the convenient explanations of religion and ideology and focus on the more complex rationales of history and oil, which mostly point the finger of blame for terrorism back at the champions of militarism, imperialism and petroleum here on our own shores....
