NHS crisis: Why is Britain's health service falling apart? | CNN

"When the Labour government came in in 1997, they injected considerably more money into the NHS. It enabled us to appoint an adequate number of staff and get on top of our waiting lists," Neville told CNN. But this level of investment did not last. In response to the 2007-2008 financial crisis, the Conservatives elected in the coalition government in 2010 embarked on a program of austerity. Budgets were cut and staff salaries frozen. For Neville, the ensuing decade saw a gradual "erosion" of the system: "Slow, subtle, but nonetheless happening."…

England and Wales now minority Christian countries, census reveals | Census | The Guardian

Meanwhile, 37.2% of people – 22.2 million – declared they had "no religion", the second most common response after Christian. It means that over the past 20 years the proportion of people reporting no religion has soared from 14.8%.…
"We might be living in a more values-driven society than ever before," he said. "Surveys show, for example, that around three in 10 British adults have humanist beliefs and values, and it's a trend we've seen growing in recent years."
Humanists say they trust science over the supernatural, base their ethics around reason, empathy and concern for humans and other sentient animals and that in the absence of an afterlife, "human beings can act to give their own lives meaning by seeking happiness in this life and helping others to do the same"...

Defund the police? Lessons from Sweden, England, Scotland, Finland, Switzerland - The Washington Post

Amid the protest wave following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the rallying cry of "defund the police" has gained momentum. President Trump is “appalled” by the movement, according to White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany. To some critics, it sounds radical. But advocates say it is simply about narrowing the role of police and investing in services specifically designed to address issues such as mental health, rehabilitation and homelessness. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/police-protests-countries-reforms/2020/06/13/596eab16-abf2-11ea-a43b-be9f6494a87d_story.html

And then there were six ... what the rest of the world thinks of Donald Trump - Daily Kos

He came late. He pouted. He left early. Even converted into Latin, it wouldn't make for a stirring motto. But that didn't stop Donald Trump's surrogates from marching across the dial to spread the word that Trump was "forceful," that he presided over a "successful" G-7, and that he only called in from Air Force One to order an international takesy-backsy because he was "betrayed" by people who earned "a special place in hell" for crossing Trump. ....

The new mother -- then 19 -- had been living in a Catholic home near London for unmarried women who had committed the ultimate sin and become pregnant. Two months after giving birth, a taxi took her to an adoption charity, where a woman carried Patrick's baby, Paul, into a room to meet his potential new parents.

"She came back in and she didn't have my baby with her," Patrick said, tears filling her eyes as she recounted the day in a new documentary. "She said, 'you can go when you're ready.'"...
