Search the Education Department’s Civil Rights Investigations With ProPublica’s Database — ProPublica

ProPublica sued the federal government for records that show which schools are facing civil rights investigations — data that was public before Trump’s second term. Now you can use our database to find cases…

How students are being treated at America’s public schools : NPR

All of this information comes from the latest Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC): a federal survey that paints one of the most comprehensive pictures of how American students are being treated at school. The federal government has been gathering this kind of information for over 50 years, partly to help the U.S. Education Department hold schools accountable for protecting student civil rights...

506 U.S. Citizens Detained (ProPublica investigative report)

The Trump administration says none of this is happening.

“DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake.” “There are no ‘indiscriminate’ stops.” Allegations of “racial profiling are disgusting, reckless and categorically FALSE.” “The pattern is NOT of law enforcement using force.” “ICE does not zip tie or restrain children.”

But that is precisely what is happening, and at a far larger scale than previously reported.

We know because we have once again done what the government hasn’t: We have tallied and cataloged every case we can find of an immigration agent holding a citizen during the current administration.

More than 500 cases. That includes:

  • More than a hundred Americans held after agents questioned their citizenship. Nearly all were people of color.
  • At least 70 American children and teens detained, some of whom were handcuffed.
  • Of the more than 300 Americans we tracked as detained for allegedly assaulting or obstructing agents, we found fewer than half were actually charged in federal court, and many of those cases were dropped or dismissed.
  • At least 63 Americans detained while recording.
  • 36 Americans held for at least a day without being able to contact a lawyer or their family.
  • Roughly a dozen citizens deported, mostly children.

Collectively, these cases show that as the administration has relentlessly pursued immigrants, federal agents have run roughshod over the constitutional rights of citizens too. We’re showing you every case — the reality that the administration denies — along with the receipts.

The Cultural Marxism Conspiracy Theory (w/AJA Woods) (Conspirituality podcast Brief)

AJA Woods (The Cultural Marxism Conspiracy) joins Matthew to trace how "cultural Marxism" mutated from Nazi "cultural Bolshevism" and the British Union of Fascists' attacks on modernist art, through Lyndon LaRouche's CIA-brainwashing lore, into Paul Weyrich and William Lind's 1990s "political correctness" rebrand, Pat Buchanan and the Tea Party's free-floating panic, Andrew Breitbart's arugula jokes, before finally landing as Christopher Rufo's anti-CRT crusade and James Lindsay's "Race Marxism."

Woods argues the throughline isn't honest scholarship on the Frankfurt School but a recurring move: relabel any liberation struggle—civil rights, feminism, trans rights, climate action—as an elite conspiracy, so its gains can be revoked as "foreign" corruption. Should sane people keep participating in these "debates" or refuse the frame and point to material stakes instead?

Federal judge asks Michigan high court to weigh in on limiting state civil rights law

The lawsuit was filed by the anti-abortion rights organization Right to Life of Michigan. The legal action claims the recently adopted provision of Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act places the organization in an impossible position. The provision forbids discrimination in hiring or promotion based on exercising the right to have an abortion...

The Texas Board of Education and Ruby Bridges: What Whitewashing Looks Like (Warren Throckmorton; The Christian Past That Wasn’t: Formerly Telling Jefferson Lies podcast)

Throckmorton says:
This is an opportunity to observe whitewashing as it happened. The Texas State Board of Education has been revising social studies standards for students in K-12. One member wanted to remove a description of why Ruby Bridges was special in civil rights history. As the first Black child to enter an all-white school in the American South, Bridges helped open doors that are still opening.

In this segment, I provide audio of the Board meeting which demonstrates the majority efforts to push aside minority concerns about the contribution of Bridges and representation in an accurate history. One of the board members who helped lead the successful effort to keep Bridges in the standards, Staci Childs Davis, joins me to talk about the meeting and her reactions to it.

In the second half of this segment, I critique Donald Trump's patriotic education initiative and speak to Jemar Tisby about whitewashing on a national scale as we move through the 250th birthday of the nation. This segment is a highlight of the season.

Student files civil rights suit against U-M alleging retaliation for support of Palestinian rights

In the complaint filed by the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice, Walker, who is Black and Muslim, accused the university of discriminating against him for his advocacy for Palestinian rights.

“Defendants acted against Plaintiff Walker because of the content of his speech and the viewpoints he expressed, as well as his racial and religious identities,” the suit reads. “As a result, Defendants subjected Mr. Walker to a deliberate and unlawful pattern of harassment and retaliation.”…

Weekly Roundup: The Grownups in Charge? SCOTUS, Gerrymandering & White Christian Power (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

The Christian Nationalist Plan to Roll America Back to the 1850s (Full Weekly Roundup)

Welcome to Straight White American Jesus. This week, Brad and Dan dive into the redistricting chaos unfolding across the country in the wake of the Supreme Court’s latest voting rights decision. From Texas to Tennessee, Louisiana to Virginia, they trace how aggressive gerrymandering efforts are reshaping American democracy — and why Christian nationalist leaders see this moment as part of a decades-long project to reclaim political power for a shrinking minority.

The episode unpacks the racial, theological, and historical dimensions of the current backlash against voting rights, with clips from figures like Kevin Roberts, Mike Johnson, and Indiana Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith. Brad and Dan examine how rhetoric about “the adults in the room” echoes older hierarchies rooted in white Christian patriarchy, and why today’s attacks on representation are inseparable from the long conservative backlash against the Voting Rights Act, civil rights reforms, and pluralistic democracy itself.

The conversation also revisits the legacy of Paul Weyrich and the Christian nationalist strategy of pursuing minority rule through institutional control rather than majority support. Along the way, Brad and Dan explore the Supreme Court’s role in enabling these shifts, the partisan battles over congressional maps, and the broader erosion of democratic norms under MAGA politics.

Topics include:
  • The Supreme Court’s latest redistricting ruling and its impact on voting rights
  • Tennessee’s dismantling of a majority-Black congressional district in Memphis
  • Christian nationalism and the push for minority rule
  • Why leaders like Mike Johnson frame white Christian men as “the adults in the room”
  • The historical roots of modern gerrymandering battles
  • The role of the FBI raid on Virginia lawmaker Louise Lucas
  • How backlash politics seeks to roll the country back to the 1950s — or even earlier
  • The ongoing assault on democratic institutions and representation
Plus: a fiery exchange between Ketanji Brown Jackson and Samuel Alito, reflections on the failures of “adult” governance in the Trump era, and reasons for hope amid mounting democratic crisis.

Hayes on SCOTUS limiting Voting Rights Act: "The story is NOT over"

 https://www.youtube.com/shorts/iK7zaG_GlP4

Two justices, one quest: push to gut Voting Rights Act reaches final act

They have flipped key elements of the US constitution to achieve the exact opposite outcome to that which had been enshrined. And they have gone against the clear will of Congress which reaffirmed the Voting Rights Act almost unanimously on multiple occasions. “The hubris of John Roberts and Samuel Alito!” Graves said. “They think they have the right to set aside the will of thousands of legislators, expressed over decades, to defend voting rights in America. It’s extraordinary, and fundamentally illegitimate.”…
