Red Scare Rising (Conspirituality podcast)

Back in the fall, Trump's NSPM-7 redirected the FBI, DOJ, and IRS toward "left-wing political violence," opening the door to labeling domestic groups terrorist organizations — despite three independent datasets (New America, CSIS, even the ADL!) showing right-wing violence outpacing left-wing violence by factors of 9-to-1 or greater. Last week, Rubio's "Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism" internationalized this McCarthy reboot.

Central to the rhetoric of Rubio and Miller is framing leftist politics as being driven by envy and resentment rather than a response to inequality. Matthew traces this rhetoric, empirically contradicted by relative deprivation research, back through Nietzsche, Scheler, Schoeck, and Rand.

Four days after the Ministerial, the State Department's Cuba report named 70+ Americans — from spies to wedding guests — as one undifferentiated network, a scapegoat machine now churning out congressional subpoenas, a federal grand jury, and a widening dragnet.

Happy Easter Here’s a War Crime (Andrew Seidel; One Nation, Indivisible podcast Episode #057)

Has there been a bigger news week?

Trump threatens to commit war crimes on Easter morning, but even before that, it was insane.

The Supreme Court just made American healthcare worse, while a California jury may have made social media much better.

The next Citizens United is averted, a Ten Commandments monument in Arkansas falls after a decade, and Trump stupidly goes to the Supreme Court in real life.

Plus, Noem’s bimbofication scandal, Bondi is out, JD doesn’t know what church he attends, and Paula White thinks Trump is Jesus. And, oh yeah, we’re going back to the moon.

Brief: Bishop Bootlicker Barron (Conspirituality podcast)

Matthew digs into the fascism-enabling political theology of Bishop Robert Barron and the rightward slide of Big Catholic media. From his early admiration of Thomas Merton—carefully stripped of his antiwar and anti-capitalist passion—to his praise for Jordan Peterson, Marco Rubio, and Charlie Kirk, Barron repackages Red Scare tropes in the language of beauty, civility, and “religious liberty.”

And what about his virtual silence on ICE operations in Minnesota and the suffering of immigrants within his own diocese? What does “religious freedom” mean when it defends American exceptionalism more than human beings?

"You Can't Tell A Good Story Without Bad Guys" (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast) It's in the Code ep 175

Josh Hawley offers us a story about men, masculinity, and American society.

But his patriarchal vision, with its appeals to Rome and medieval Christendom, is not a popular story—it's not a story that most Americans are eager to hear.

So how does Hawley try to make that story more attractive? How does he make it feel more inviting and reasonable?

He does it the same way other storytellers might—he creates antagonists that an audience will hate and fear. Check out this week's episode to hear more.

The conversation moves to JD Vance’s pro-natalist rhetoric and his troubling comments on immigration, revealing the racial and religious undertones driving the GOP’s messaging. Brad and Dan also discuss Trump’s escalating feud with Elon Musk and the disturbing implications of Trump’s remarks about Zoran Momdani.

The Fears of Christian Nationalism: Interview with Andrew Whitehead (Warren Throckmorton; Telling Jefferson Lies -- debunking the myth that America was founded as a Christian nation podcast)

Why are Christian nationalists angry about the New York City Democratic mayoral primary victory of Zohran Mamdani? They surely are. Many are blaming "unchecked" immigration for his win. White Christians nationalist fear they are being replaced by too many non-Christians and too many black and brown people. In light of this event and the overall attacks on immigrants taking place in Trump's America, have I got a segment for you. We also hear from a founding father on why Muslims should not be discriminated against.

In contrast to prior episodes, this one features one guest: Sociologist Andrew Whitehead. Andrew is associate professor of sociology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, where he codirects the Association of Religion Data Archives at the Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture. He is also the author of American Idolatry: How Christian Nationalism Betrays the Gospel and Threatens the Church (2023) and co-author with Samuel Perry of Taking America Back for God: Christian Nationalism in the United States (2020).

The focus of the episode is what Christian nationalists fear, which is almost everything. Andrew does a wonderful job of breaking down what Christian nationalists fear and how fear is related to Christian nationalism. We also discussed why the Christian aspect of Christian nationalism isn't enough for Christian nationalists. It is good and proper to discuss the deficits in Christian nationalist history, but it is also important to understand the psychology behind the Christians who seek comfort in nationalism.

This isn't all about psychology; there is some history too. We hear from James Iredell, an early Supreme Court justice who has a good word for us today.

Mama Bears, Queen Esther, and “Don’t Mess w/ Our Kids” (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast) (Spirit and Power S2 Ep3)

On October 12, 2024, tens of thousands of Christians gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., answering a call from charismatic activist Jenny Donnelly and pastor Lou Engle.

The event, held on Yom Kippur, blended prayer political mobilization as speakers urged believers to take action ahead of the 2024 election.

With banners reading #DontMessWithOurKids, the rally tapped into fears about gender and sexuality, echoing similar movements abroad.

The results of the 2024 election suggest Donnelly’s efforts were effective. With insight from journalists Alice Herman and Elle Hardy, Dr. Leah Payne asks: who is Jenny Donnelly? How did she rise to this unique position of influence in the Trump media-verse? And how is her fusion of faith, activism, and conspiracy shaping the Christian right?

“Queers Need Not Apply” (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast, Ep #132) (It's In the Code)

Why is there no acknowledgement of queer identity or expression within the sex/gender ideology of conservative high-control Christianity? What does this tell us about how queerness is understood within this subculture? And why is queer identity simultaneously denied and perceived as an existential threat? Check out this week’s episode to hear what Dan has to say.

Weekly Roundup: The Government Controls the Weather (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

In this episode, we take a closer look at the conspiracy theories circulating around hurricanes Helene and Milton, particularly the claims that the government is controlling the weather for political purposes. We discuss how this kind of misinformation distorts public perception and disrupts emergency responses. From there, we shift to Donald Trump’s ongoing campaign of fear, examining his controversial interactions with Vladimir Putin and his targeted efforts to appeal to disaffected young male voters. We also explore the broader challenge of addressing real crises in a world filled with disinformation, and offer insights on gender dynamics in voting, drawing from Barack Obama’s perspectives.

Brief: Plandemic Takes the Promenade (Julian Walker; Conspirituality podcast)

An anti-vax, COVID-grievance, climate-science denying, communism panic-generating film by Mikki Willis just won “Best Documentary Feature” at the Santa Monica International Film Festival.

Julian attended the festival in order to track how Willis’s latest paranoid pseudomentary, “Plandemic 3: The Great Awakening,” was platformed at this annual fete held in affluent Santa Monica alongside two other conspiracy films: “Shot Dead” and “We Will Not Be Silenced.” These three films include a who’s-who of conspiritualists: David Icke, JP Sears, Alex Jones, Joe Rogan, Brian Rose, Peter McCullough, and newer “medical whistle-blowers.”

This is the on-the-ground story about how a 30-year-old normie independent film festival got red-pilled into platforming such dangerous misinformation.
