Social media trial: Meta and Google ordered to pay $6 million : NPR

"But this verdict is bigger than one case. For years, social media companies have profited from targeting children while concealing their addictive and dangerous design features. Today's verdict is a referendum — from a jury, to an entire industry — that accountability has arrived," he said in a joint statement with the plaintiff's legal team. 

Meta and Google said they disagree with the verdict. Meta said it is weighing its legal options and Google plans to appeal. 

"This case misunderstands YouTube, which is a responsibly built streaming platform, not a social media site," said Google spokesman José Castañeda…

Jury finds D.C. ‘sandwich guy’ not guilty of assaulting officer - The Washington Post

The meatiest factual dispute concerned whether the salami sub had "exploded" on the CBP agent's uniform. The agent, Gregory Lairmore, testified that he mostly tried to ignore Dunn's late-night tirade outside a Subway restaurant, until he felt the impact of the sandwich through his bulletproof vest. 

"The sandwich kind of exploded all over my uniform," Lairmore said. "It smelled of onions and mustard." 

Defense attorney Sabrina Shroff then displayed a photo of the wrapped sandwich lying on the ground and pressed the agent to clarify whether it had really exploded. Lairmore said a piece of the sub seemed to be visible in the photo. "I had mustard and condiments on my uniform, and an onion hanging from my radio antenna that night," the agent said…

Trial starts for DC man charged with throwing sandwich at federal agent

Julia Gatto, one of Dunn's lawyers, questioned why Trump's justice department is prosecuting Dunn after the Republican president issued pardons and ordered the dismissal of assault cases stemming from a mob's attack on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021. 

 "It's an obvious answer," Gatto said during a hearing last Thursday. "The answer is they have different politics. And that's selective prosecution."…

Idaho abortion trial to hear from women denied medically necessary abortions

The trial, which starts on Tuesday and is expected to last through at least Thursday, is part of a lawsuit filed by abortion rights supporters who want to clarify the medical exceptions in Idaho's near-total abortion ban. Currently, abortions are only permitted in Idaho to preserve a patient's health. The vagueness of the exception means women have been forced to go out of state for the procedure, or wait until they get sick enough that doctors can legally intervene...
