After Roe, pregnant women face increased risk of criminal prosecution | PBS News

In the first year after the Supreme Court ended the federal right to an abortion, 210 women faced charges for behavior related to pregnancy, abortion, pregnancy loss or birth. The decision emboldened prosecutors to develop aggressive strategies to charge and imprison pregnant women and mothers. But even prior to the overturning of Roe, hundreds of women faced such charges. Sarah Varney reports...

GOP’s Tim Sheehy revives discredited abortion claims in pivotal Senate race - PolitiFact

Sheehy's description of Tester's "extreme" position that would allow abortion "up until the moment of birth" simply doesn't hold up.

These statements are rooted in Tester's support for the Women's Health Protection Act. That bill, however, doesn't open the door to abortion on demand later in pregnancy. Instead, it allows for the role of medical judgment. In addition, CDC data indicates that late-term pregnancies are rare. Also, the term "elective abortion" is a political rather than medical phrasing…

An Alabama woman was imprisoned for ‘endangering’ her fetus. She gave birth in a jail shower | Alabama | The Guardian

In October, when her water broke and she pleaded to be taken to a hospital, her lawyer says, officials told her to "sleep it off" and "wait until Monday" to deliver – two days away.

During nearly 12 hours of labor, staff gave her only Tylenol for her pain, the suit says, allegedly telling her to "stop screaming", to "deal with the pain" and that she was "not in full labor". Caswell lost amniotic fluid and blood and was alone and standing up in a jail shower when she ultimately delivered her child, according to the complaint and her medical records. She nearly bled to death, her lawyers say...

She lost her child in a home birth. Prosecutors charged her with murder

The San Diego district attorney is moving forward with charges of murder "with malice" and child endangerment and has cited her decision to have an "unattended delivery" as well as her alleged drug use. Prosecutors have continued to pursue the case despite the county medical examiner saying the manner of death was an "accident"; medical experts testifying that the state's cause-of-death claims were not backed by scientific evidence; and the passage of a new California law explicitly prohibiting the criminalization of pregnancy loss. If convicted, Carpenter could face a life sentence. …

The case comes as women across the US have been increasingly subjected to surveillance, arrest and charges for abortions, stillbirths and other actions that police claimed "endangered" their fetuses, with routine healthcare decisions and pregnancy outcomes treated as crimes...

Rural Hospitals Are Shuttering Their Maternity Units - The New York Times

Women in rural areas face a higher risk of pregnancy-related complications, according to a study by the Commonwealth Fund. Those living in so-called maternity care deserts are three times as likely to die during pregnancy and the critical year afterward as those who are closer to care, according to a study of mothers in Louisiana...

Abortion associated with lower psychological distress compared to both adoption and unwanted birth, study finds

Of the four outcomes, unwanted birth and adoption had the highest scores on a measure of psychological distress. Research has found that unplanned or unintended pregnancy is related to postpartum depression and is also related to subsequent neglect, abuse, and poor child well-being. Research has also found that unintended pregnancies that result in abortion or adoption can have mental health consequences of their own...

… Additionally, the study concludes with these thoughts, "This study showed that among women who experienced an unintended pregnancy, the unwanted birth and adoption group had worse long-term psychological distress consequences. Abortion did not lead to negative psychological consequences. Therefore, it is important to ensure equal and safe abortion opportunities and providing more support to women with unwanted birth."…

Fatal police violence may be linked to preterm births in neighborhoods nearby

… These findings are critical for a number of reasons. Preterm birth is the leading cause of infant death and may also carry implications for a child's short- and long-term health. Mothers of preterm children may experience adverse mental health outcomes like increased anxiety and fatigue and use postnatal services less...

New Parents Hit With Huge Surprise Medical Bill Because Of The 'Birthday Rule' : Shots - Health News : NPR

... When a child is born into a family in which both parents have insurance through their jobs, the parents are supposed to "coordinate benefits'' — meaning they must tell both insurers that their child is eligible for coverage under two plans. The parents might be forgiven for thinking they have some say in how their child will be insured.
In most cases, they don't. Instead, a child with double health insurance eligibility must take as primary coverage the plan of the parent whose birthday comes first in the calendar year; the other parent's insurance is considered secondary. This model regulation was set by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and adopted by most states, including Kansas, says Lee Modesitt, director of government affairs with the Kansas Insurance Department...

When was Jesus Really Born? The Quirinius Conundrum (with J Warner Wallace)

It's a question for the ages... is the Bible right about the timing of Jesus' birth? The gospel of Luke says it was during the time of King Herod, and while Quirinius was the Governor of Syria. But history says that is impossible... those events are 10 years apart. What is to be made of this apparent contradiction?

Bernie Sanders says it’s better to give birth in Finland than the U.S. He’s right - The Washington Post

A few years ago, personal finance writer Ester Bloom, faced with a four-figure health-insurance deductible and a narrow network of doctors to choose from, attempted to price out how much giving birth to her younger child would cost her. It turned out to be an all but impossible task...
