What is Christian Nationalism? An Interview with Paul Matzko, Part One (Warren Throckmorton; Telling Jefferson Lies podcast)

Paul Matzko is a historian and senior program manager for AI and emerging technology at the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University. He is also an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute and host of the Unintended Consequences podcast.

Today, he joins me to discuss how Christian nationalism differs from citizen engagement with politics. Often Christian nationalists complain that they are simply living out their faith in the public square. However, Paul teases out the differences between policies which benefit the common good and those which are designed to benefit mainly or only Christians affiliated with the regime in power.

This is part one of a two-part interview. Next week, I will have the conclusion where Paul talks about the bitter consequences of Christian nationalism and addresses the question: Has Christian nationalism ever worked?

Topics today:
  • What is Christian nationalism?
  • Christian nationalism and the ideology of South African apartheid
  • Christian nationalism and Geralf L. K. Smith
  • Billy Sunday and the Klan
  • MAGA as the modern America First movement
  • Christian nationalism is a different faith than orthodox Christianity
  • Christian nationalism and public schools
  • and much more...

US grants asylum to 54 white Afrikaner South Africans, reports say

South Africa's foreign ministry said in a statement: "It is most regrettable that it appears that the resettlement of South Africans to the United States under the guise of being 'refugees' is entirely politically motivated and designed to question South Africa's constitutional democracy; a country which has in fact suffered true persecution under apartheid rule and has worked tirelessly to prevent such levels of discrimination from ever occurring again."

How the roots of the ‘PayPal mafia’ extend to apartheid South Africa | Elon Musk | The Guardian

"What is indisputable is that Musk and Thiel grew up amid incredible privilege where the racial hierarchy was clear. Those who claimed to reject apartheid sought to explain this privilege not as the result of systemic racial oppression but the natural order of things thanks to their own abilities. That in turn led some to regard all forms government as oppressive and true liberty as an individual battle for survival…"

"You can call this anti-democratic principle dictatorship if you wish. In Italy it is called 'Fascism', in Germany 'German National Socialism' and in South Africa 'Christian nationalism'."…

"We all [white South Africans], by the very nature of our privileges and our place in the racial hierarchy, grew up believing we were the master race, even if we didn't actively think about it,"…

Palestinian Christians welcome Amnesty International’s apartheid report – Mondoweiss

"We in Kairos Palestine hope that global churches, especially the Vatican and the World Council of Churches meeting this year in Germany will adopt these reports and respond accordingly to Palestinians' pleas for justice and an end to Israel's brutal occupation."
Kairos Palestine's statement indirectly addresses those who accuse Amnesty International and supporters of its report of antisemitism. Quoting from its 2009 document, Kairos Palestine: A Moment of Truth, Palestinian Christians reaffirmed their hope for justice and reconciliation…

Amnesty says Israel is an apartheid state. Many Israeli politicians agree

Israel's former attorney general, Michael Ben-Yair, was even clearer.
"We established an apartheid regime in the occupied territories immediately following their capture. That oppressive regime exists to this day," he said in 2002.
