Kate Cohen: "Tampon Tim" and the Long Reach of Religion | FFRF Convention 2024

Kate Cohen's talk, "'Tampon Tim' and the Long Reach of Religion," highlights how religion continues to influence public policy, especially in education. She takes aim at school voucher programs that funnel public money into religious institutions and connect Christian nationalism to anti-LGBTQ and anti-transgender laws. With humor, she explains how media and politics intersect with religious bias, referencing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz being mocked for his progressive policies. Cohen emphasizes that challenging religious influence is essential for protecting personal freedoms and fostering equality.

Michael Cohen, Key to Trump Trial, Tells Jurors of Seedy Hush-Money Plot - The New York Times

He brought the case's architecture into focus, offering firsthand corroboration of what jurors have heard from other witnesses. He also wove a sprawling cast of characters into a single narrative, saying that Mr. Trump, bent on winning the presidency, had orchestrated the coverup of scandalous stories.

Mr. Cohen recalled playing an intimate role in concealing or spinning away the stories that could have torpedoed Mr. Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. None was bigger than when Ms. Daniels shopped her account of a sexual liaison with Mr. Trump, which Mr. Cohen said posed a "catastrophic" threat.

"Total disaster," Mr. Cohen quoted Mr. Trump saying. "Women will hate me."…

Michael Cohen ‘appalled’ at ‘royal treatment’ Trump received during surrender in Georgia | The Hill

"How much money did it cost the American taxpayers? How much money did it cost the people of Atlanta in order to put all the police officers? For what? For this man to roll up like he's, you know, Caesar coming through the gates of Rome after victory? He is an indicted defendant on 91 counts, he should not be given this sort of royal treatment," he added...

Trump Saw Mar-a-Lago Docs As 'Get Out of Jail Free Card': Michael Cohen

Imagining what Trump might say, Cohen said: "'You want to play with me? Really? I was the former president of the United States. I have documents that are so damaging to this country's national security. Go ahead, indict me, try to throw me in prison. See what happens.'
"What happens is he turns over all this classified information, not as if he hasn't already done it, but he turns all his classified information over to our adversaries, right? 'You want to play that game? No problem!'"...

Michael Cohen: Here's What's Really Behind Trump's Election Lies | HuffPost

...Cohen noted that many of Trump's most devout supporters have indicated they would support him no matter what.
"From them, he just wants $4.99 a month. And for that $4.99 a month, you get to listen to all the bullshit and all the far-right-wing conspiracies that Donald Trump can dream up," Cohen said. "That's what he's going to sell you. That's $100 million a month, $1.2 billion a year. That's going to pay for the gas in his 757."...

Michael Cohen on How ‘Monster’ Trump Will Undermine Biden

...The money he's raising is going toward the Save America PAC, which will be the base from which he establishes an entire parallel system of government. I call it the Republic of MAGAstan, and its capital will be in Florida at Mar-a-Lago. He's also going to have his own 24/7 media platform with Trump TV, which will be an unholy alliance between Newsmax, OANN, and whoever he can drag from the swamp looking for relevance. He'll continue to suck from the veins of his MAGA faithful while chipping away at the Biden presidency, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the election. All of this is in service of a Trump 2024 run for president and his return to power. If this happens, all bets are off. He will try to change the Constitution and give himself a third term...

Congress must repeal tax breaks for the wealthy passed in CARES Act | TheHill

Addressing the coronavirus pandemic and its economic consequences is our highest priority. Too many lives have been upended by the disease and the incompetent and halting response to it by the Trump administration. Unfortunately, we can always count on those with special interests to take advantage of a crisis, often out of the public eye. I am one of several members of Congress who object to the tax break for millionaires that was surreptitiously placed in the CARES Act by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Senate Republicans. I joined Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas, Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Sherrod Brown of Ohio in April in introducing a measure to repeal these obscene tax breaks that have little to do with the pandemic or related business losses since pre-pandemic losses back to 2018 are made eligible.....

'He was no leader': South Africa denounces Trump's reported comments about Mandela

The report that U.S. President Donald Trump made crude, disparaging remarks about Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning former leader, has drawn an angry response from South Africa’s ruling party and others. According to a book written by Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal lawyer, Trump said that Mandela, who guided South Africa in its politically fraught transition from a racist apartheid government to a democracy, was a terrible leader. Cohen wrote that after Mandela’s death in 2013, Trump said: “Mandela f---ed the whole country up. Now it’s a s---hole. F--- Mandela. He was no leader.”
