Republicans Move to Block a Policing Change Made After Tyre Nichols’s Death - The New York Times

It remains unclear why Mr. Nichols was stopped. Police officers brutally beat and kicked him despite his efforts to comply with their demands. The violence, captured on camera, horrified the nation and led to further scrutiny of the Memphis Police Department and its heavy handed tactics...

Andry Barreto, who recorded the video and is also a Venezuelan migrant, confirmed that he saw the employee strike Cordero and started when the altercation escalated. At some point by the time police arrived, Parra showed up with their three children.

"I never lifted my hand," Cordero, who was released from custody with Parra, told the Times. "I never told the police anything except not to touch my child."…

How the Supreme Court gave police cover for raids gone wrong

It would be nice to think we shouldn't need the courts to tell police to avoid unnecessary violence, to abide by the Constitution, and to exercise due diligence when battering down doors and storming homes in the dead of night.

But the last 17 years have demonstrated that we clearly do. And until judges start taking seriously their responsibility to protect the Fourth Amendment, expect to see more innocent people shot, more injured children and bystanders, and more avoidable, unnecessary death...

‘Where is safe?’: gun violence takes particular toll on mental health of Black Americans

"Where is the safe place for Black people to be?" Hardy asked. "Not church, not the playground, not the supermarket, not the library, not the university, not the classroom. There's nowhere. So, there's a constant anxiety that Black people live with." LoPresti added that police violence against Black people also exacerbates safety concerns, as many of them feel that calling law enforcement could open them up to additional brutality. "The racialized violence that we've seen at the hands of police officers has led Black people in Black communities to feel as if there's no one we can call," LoPresti said. "There's no one, we can sort of trust to value us as much as we value each other."

Opinion | Why the DOJ’s report on Minneapolis policing is such a watershed - The Washington Post

Further, the reports do not limit the need for alternative approaches to public safety to mental health crises. The Minneapolis report notes a broader need to pursue "approaches to addressing crime other than through policing," such as using violence interrupters and public health prevention strategies, to move away from policing tactics that reliably produce harmful racial disparities...

Minneapolis police report proves 2020 activists were right all along

"The Minneapolis Police Department, the probe found, "uses excessive force, including unjustified deadly force and other types of force"; "unlawfully discriminates against Black and Native American people in its enforcement activities"; "violates the rights of people engaged in protected speech"; and discriminates against people with behavioral health issues."

Opinion | The DOJ report on Minneapolis after George Floyd's killing offers lessons - The Washington Post

George Floyd was far from the first or only one. Men shot during foot chases or no-knock raids; a 14-year-old boy held by the throat, beaten with a flashlight and pinned by a knee at his neck and back; protesters pushed to the ground; a journalist who lost her eye to a rubber bullet.

These are only a few of the incidents the Justice Department underscores in a report after its multiyear investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department. The report, released Friday, is 89 pages of disturbing but hardly surprising details regarding an institution that the DOJ describes as having systemically used excessive force as well as discriminated against racial minorities. These issues predated the murder in summer 2020 that set off protests across the country...

The lawsuit says that officers were told to go to minority neighborhoods to write tickets because it would be "easier to write multiple citations on every stop."
