Louisiana AG Liz Murrill Keeps Opposing Compensation for Wrongfully Convicted People — ProPublica

Hard Line on Payments: In her two years in the role, Louisiana attorney general Liz Murrill has opposed almost all compensation claims by wrongfully convicted people.

Freed After Four Decades: Elvis Brooks’ murder conviction was thrown out after a prosecutor admitted he hid potentially exonerating evidence. Murrill maintains he’s guilty.

January 6 defendants pursue millions in claims through obscure federal process

“President Donald Trump still wants to pay off violent insurrectionists who attacked police officers on January 6th, despite any claims from members of his administration that say otherwise,” Schiff said in a statement. “Our taxpayer dollars should not be used to pay out criminals, and we can pass a law right now to prevent this president or any future administration from paying off their friends and political allies.”…

Why is Michigan Failing to Compensate the Wrongly Convicted? — ProPublica

Michigan has the fifth-most exonerations in the country, according to the National Registry of Exonerations: 169 wrongful convictions in state courts since 1989, with an average of nearly 11 years of incarceration. Passed with bipartisan support, WICA was intended as a lifeline for former prisoners who were wrongfully convicted and to account, in part, for the harm done to them.

Of the 103 people who filed claims between 2017 and late 2023, about 68% received compensation, according to Jeffrey S. Gutman, a clinical law professor at George Washington University who researches compensation statutes across the country.

Advocates and people who were wrongfully imprisoned have said that the money often makes a huge difference at an impossibly vulnerable time. Many are rebuilding with no family, no home, no job prospects, no driver's license, no resources to navigate trauma…

Elon Musk testifies in Delaware court, defending massive Tesla pay - The Washington Post

The trial highlights Musk's singular position as a top executive of five companies at once, and calls into question whether the terms of his leadership at Tesla are in the best interests of the carmaker's shareholders, or of Musk himself. It's the second time in two years Musk has testified in a trial stemming from a Tesla shareholder lawsuit, after a 2021 trial that questioned his role in Tesla's 2016 acquisition of his cousin's solar-panel company, SolarCity. Musk prevailed in that case...

Some companies are reporting big raises. But they’re not real. - The Washington Post

The Trump border wall faces a serious legal obstacle - Quartz

US president Donald Trump has staked a lot on his plans to build a wall along the border with Mexico. He has shut down the federal government over its alleged failure to budget sufficiently for this project and insists that a barrier will solve drug trafficking and immigration woes, even threatening to declare a national emergency to get this done. His insistence is disconcerting, sure. However, his plan is not realistic.....
