Undocumented Ex-Trump Employees Detail Alleged Abuses to Samantha Bee - Vanity Fair

What was it like to work on Donald Trump’s properties as an undocumented employee—both before and after he ran for president? On Wednesday’s Full Frontal, Samantha Bee interviewed multiple former employees to find out. The roundtable interview included workers who had been on Trump’s payroll for four to 10 years. What’s striking, however, is how they say the treatment they received shifted once Trump began his presidential run.

Kneeling Dishonors Veterans? What About Deporting Them? -- The Daily Beast

It's an insult to veterans of our armed services and an embarrassment to the nation. But it has nothing to do with football players kneeling during the national anthem to protest racism and police brutality. ....

"American Crime" Takes On Farming And Illegal Immigration With An Unsparing Lens

As in its past two seasons, ABC's anthology series American Crime opens with a timely and provocative image. In a nondescript desert near the U.S./Mexican border, a group of men and women are being smuggled into the United States. They manage to cut through a gap in the wall that already divides the two countries. Quickly though, viewers learn that the red-capped man the show is asking us to follow isn't interested in merely nabbing a farm job in nearby Texas or California. He has his eyes set on North Carolina. His reasons are slowly revealed throughout the show's eight-episode run — as it turns out he's looking for someone who might have gone missing from one of the farms in the state....

How Did We Get To 11 Million Unauthorized Immigrants?

An estimated 11 million immigrants live and work in the United States illegally. Their fate is one of the big policy questions facing the country.

The story of how that population grew so large is a long one that's mostly about Mexico, and full of unintended consequences. Prior to the 1920s, the U.S. had few restrictions on immigration, save for a few notable exclusions. "Basically, people could show up," says Jeffrey Passel, of the Pew Research Center. For workers in Mexico, crossing into the U.S. made a lot of economic sense, then and now....

How Trump Will 'Take the Shackles Off' DHS Employees With New Immigration Policies

The Homeland Security Department has issued new guidance to implement President Trump’s executive orders on immigration and border security, giving several components more authority to enforce laws and hire new personnel.

The memorandums by DHS Secretary John Kelly will “take the shackles off” Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol employees, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Tuesday. The sets of guidance are not meant to create mass deportations, he said, though they remove all classes and categories of undocumented immigrants exempt from deportation....

National Guard memo is ‘reminiscent of what led up to World War II,’ a top House Democrat says

The chairman of the House Democratic Caucus said Friday that reports that the Trump administration had considered deploying tens of thousands of National Guard troops to apprehend undocumented immigrants were “outrageous” and “very reminiscent of what led up to World War II.” Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) made the statement in an interview for C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers” program shortly after the Associated Press broke news of the draft Department of Homeland Security memo....

Andrew Puzder withdraws as a labor secretary nominee

Andrew Puzder has withdrawn as President Donald Trump's choice for labor secretary, a dramatic decision caused by a GOP revolt that claimed the first Cabinet nominee of the new administration.

Puzder, the CEO of the company that owns the Hardee's and Carl's Jr. fast food chains, faced fierce opposition mostly from Democrats in part related to his position on labor issues as well as the fact that he employed an undocumented immigrant housekeeper....
