Lafayette Park permanent fencing proposal worries protesters : NPR

Pearl said it might, paradoxically, make it easier to convey his message, since more fencing would have the practical effect of funneling tourists into an even smaller area. But he's upset about the symbolism of the White House — which is funded by taxpayers — being further closed off from the public it is supposed to serve.

"What this fencing represents, to me, is the worst of what the new attitude toward politics represents. And that is imperialism, fascism, dictatorship," Pearl said. "Because what dictators do is isolate themselves from the people they rule. That is not, for me, the way democracies can possibly work."…

Workers racing to turn reflecting pool blue for Trump may be at risk, union warns

Other companies that do similar work have expressed indignation over being denied the chance to compete for the contract, according to Herbert Zaldivar, the business development director of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, who has visited the site as an observer.

Now the award is threatening to boomerang amid disclosures that Trump drastically understated the contract’s cost, and reports that officials at the Department of the Interior – which has responsibility for the site – are dissatisfied with the company’s work…

Meanwhile, the contract’s true cost – which Trump initially told journalists would be $1.8m – has been revealed to be $13.1m…

Thousands gather in Washington DC for daylong America-themed prayer rally

Against the backdrop of the Washington Monument, worship music blared from a stage that made clear the event’s Christian focus. Arched stained-glass windows, set underneath grand columns resembling a federal building, depicted the nation’s founders alongside a white cross… .

The White House-backed event has drawn broad criticism for blurring the lines between church and state, as prominent Republican officials appeared to speak alongside a slate of mostly evangelical speakers…

In D.C., Catholic leaders hold procession and Mass in support of migrants - The Washington Post

The archbishop said border security is every nation's right, and the deportation of undocumented immigrants convicted of serious crimes is "a legitimate national goal." But that's not what is happening, he said.

"Our Catholic community in Washington has witnessed many people of deep faith, integrity and compassion who have been swept up and deported in the crackdown which has been unleashed in our nation," McElroy said. "As citizens, we must not be silent as this profound injustice is carried out in our name."…

National Guard documents show public ‘fear,’ troops’ ‘shame’ over D.C. presence - The Washington Post

In another update, the Guard indicates troops "continue efforts to restore and beautify public spaces across the District" and have "cleared 906 bags of trash, spread 744 cubic yards of mulch, removed five truckloads of plant waste, cleared 3.2 miles of roadway, and painted 270 feet of fencing."

Those statistics may be among the most consequential takeaways of Trump's use of the military in D.C., Dempsey said, and should prompt scrutiny of whether this mission was ever necessary in the first place.

"That is such a suboptimal use of military training that we should all be asking, 'Why are they here?'" Dempsey said. "If they're picking up trash, they're not here for a security emergency. There's no clearer metric than that."…
