AZ Atheist Lawmaker Gives Invocation, Then Gets Mocked by Christian Colleague | Hemant Mehta | Friendly Atheist | Patheos

In 2017, Arizona State Rep. Athena Salman, an openly atheist legislator, delivered an invocation to open up the day’s session. It was a perfectly respectful speech, referring to “the humanity that resides within each and every person here.” Yet it offended Republicans who insisted all invocations needed to invoke a “Higher Power.” One Republican was even given permission to deliver his own prayer to effectively “correct” the one Salman gave.....

Federal Court Ruling Supports Religious Freedom, Strikes Down Florida County’s Prayer Practice | Americans United

Over the weekend, a federal court struck down a Florida county’s practice of denying atheists, humanists and other non-theists the opportunity to offer invocations at the start of the county commission’s meetings. The U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida ruled the policy of Brevard County’s Board of County Commissioners to allow only monotheistic, overwhelmingly Christian invocations violated both the U.S. and Florida Constitutions – namely by the government showing favoritism for certain faiths.....

After Her Godless Invocation, AZ State Rep. “Only Had Positive Feedback” Online

A few months ago, Arizona State Rep. Athena Salman delivered a secular invocation on the floor of the House, only to be chastised by a Republican representative who then gave his own Christian invocation… you know, to show his female colleague how it was done....

Athena Salman, atheist legislator, on secular values and godless invocations

As member of the Arizona House of Representatives, Athena Salman took her turn recently and offered an invocation before the start of the day’s business. But the first-term Democrat from Tempe, is an atheist and her invocation did not reference a higher power....

Maine Senate wrong to deny secular invocation

The state of Maine allows anyone to give an invocation to the House or Senate once they have been invited by a member. I was invited by Rep. Kent Ackley, I-Monmouth, to give an invocation to the Maine House. The well-received secular invocation was given on Feb. 7. There were a few objections, but with 151 members that is to be expected. Several members praised the invocation and one member asked for a copy....

Delaware senator's anti-Muslim comments draw rebuke

Comments that state Sen. Dave Lawson, R-Marydel, made about Islam on the floor of the chamber Wednesday led to a rare rebuke from the chamber's chief member and sparked a brief but fierce discussion about religious freedom.

"We just heard from the Quran, which calls for our very demise," Lawson said after a Muslim duo gave the invocation, including a passage from their holy text. "I fought for this country, not to be damned by someone that comes in here and prays to their God for our demise. I think that's despicable."...
