Weekly Roundup: Try That in a Barbie World (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

Brad and Dan begin by discussing the new Florida school curriculum that forces teachers to tell students that enslaved people received some benefit from their enslaved condition. Dan reports on Gov. Ron DeSantis’ claim that enslaved people would have been able to develop trade skills and other “personal benefits.”

In the second segment Brad outlines the controversy surrounding Jason Aldean’s song “Try That in A Small Town,” explaining why it’s code and what the history of lynching and other violence tells us about it.

In the final segment the hosts discuss the right-wing temper tantrums in reaction to the Barbie movie.

"While her children were riding the school bus in Kearney last spring, mother Tiffaney Whitt said they were called the N-word by fellow students, who threatened to fight, kill and hang them from trees," The Kansas City Star reported Thursday. "The threats were reported to the school authorities, but no students were reprimanded, according to a federal lawsuit filed against the Kearney school district and school bus service this week. It's the second lawsuit filed against the district in the past few months alleging a pattern of severe racial harassment and discrimination against Black students in the overwhelmingly white Clay County district — and a failure by school officials to stop it."…

…The legislation passed by Congress and soon to be signed into law is named in memory of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old from Chicago who was visiting relatives in Mississippi in 1955 when he was lynched after being accused of leering at a White woman. Not only did the two White men who killed him get acquitted, but they openly bragged about how they killed Till. If only there had been a federal law that could have been used to try to hold them to account…

…Within a matter of minutes after the crowd that lynched him put Will Brown into the raging bonfire at the intersection of 17th and Dodge streets in downtown Omaha, Nebraska, his bullet-riddled, mutilated body was destroyed. It was 28 September 1919, and the 41-year-old laborer had been pulled out of the Douglas county courthouse building four blocks away after a mob estimated to be between 5,000 and 20,000 white locals laid siege to it. Over two days one of the final, most dramatic occurrences of the fateful 1919 Red Summer unfolded in Omaha because a 19-year-old white woman cried rape at the hands of a Black man...
