Amnesty International USA Responds to Reports of Cruel, Deadly Tactics by Texas Troops at the Border

In response to reports about Texas DPS troops receiving instructions to push children into the Rio Grande and deny water to asylum seekers, Amy Fischer, Director of Refugee and Migrant Rights at Amnesty International USA said: .

"Amnesty International USA would like to remind Governor Abbott that seeking asylum is a human right, and these attempts to block people seeking safety from exercising that right by embracing cruel, deadly tactics is utterly shameful. Border barriers and fencing only serve to push people to take more dangerous routes to seek safety. That reality coupled with instructions for frontline officers to push children and babies into the river and deny water to people seeking safety even during extreme heat is absolutely appalling. The United States has both a legal and moral obligation to ensure that people arriving at borders are treated humanely and provided access to seek asylum. It is imperative for Governor Abbott to immediately rectify this policy, and remove any buoys, barbed wire, or other barriers from the border and ensure that any officer at the border is instructed to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of all migrants and asylum seekers they may encounter…ttps://www.commondreams.org/newswire/amnesty-international-usa-responds-to-reports-of-cruel-deadly-tactics-by-texas-troops-at-the-border

The email, which the Guardian independently reviewed, gives a report of weekly events from 24 June to 1 July, detailing several cases of migrants being caught or injured by barbed wire in Eagles Pass, a Texas city along the US border with Mexico. In the email, Wingate calls for several policy changes to prevent further injury to migrants, including removing barrels wrapped in razor wire in the river.

"The wire and barrels in the river needs to be taken out as this is nothing but an inhumane trap in high water and low visibility," Wingate wrote…

“Somebody Is Going to Die”: Lawyer Describes Chaos, Illness & Danger at Migrant Child Jail in Texas

Outrage is mounting over a shocking Associated Press report published late last week revealing that at least 250 migrant infants, children and teenagers have been locked up for nearly a month without adequate food, water or sanitation at a Border Patrol station in Clint, Texas, near the city of El Paso. Lawyers who visited the facility described a scene of chaos and sickness, with children unable to shower or change into clean clothes for weeks on end. The AP report came the same week that the Trump administration argued in federal court that the government is not required to provide toothbrushes, soap or beds to children detained at the border, and as other reports found similarly squalid conditions at a number of immigration jails. We speak with Warren Binford, a lawyer who interviewed children detained at the Clint, Texas, facility...
