Her teen son was being radicalized online — until she stepped in : NPR

Nihilistic violent extremism

In March, the FBI issued a public service announcement warning of "violent online networks," such as 764 and CVLT, that target minors and other vulnerable individuals. It has also shared informational reels on Instagram to educate parents and educators about these groups and share warning signs that young people may be under these networks' influence. The messaging attempts to convey the unusual breadth of activities and motives found within these networks, spanning from sexual gratification to building clout within these online spaces.

The FBI has recently focused on a relatively new motive within this area, for which it has coined the term "nihilistic violent extremism."

"The term Nihilistic Violent Extremism (NVE) refers to what is motivating some of these subjects to commit criminal acts," the FBI wrote in a statement to NPR. "They want to sow chaos and facilitate the destruction of society." The agency shared that it is pursuing at least 250 investigations tied to violent online networks. The FBI did not agree to an interview with NPR...

How a Nazi-Obsessed Amateur Historian Went From Obscurity to the Top of Substack – Mother Jones

Cooper's suggestion that many Jewish deaths during the Holocaust had been unintentional ended up provoking the largest backlash of his career.Then-President Joe Biden's White House called the interview a "disgusting and sadistic insult to all Americans." Dani Dayan, the chairman of Yad Vashem, Israel's official Holocaust memorial, said that Carlson and Cooper had "engaged in one of the most repugnant forms of Holocaust denial of recent years."

But the response to Cooper on the right said more about his place in the world. Vance refused to condemn the Holocaust revisionism on the grounds that Republicans "believe in free speech and debate." … ...

Cooper provides not a single detail in the episode about the horrors that American soldiers encountered at Dachau, or what the victims they liberated endured. Instead, at Cooper's camp, the victims worth mentioning are German…

Why did satirical genius Tom Lehrer swap worldwide fame for obscurity?

In the 1950s and 60s, his songs stunned and delighted listeners with their irreverence, wit and nihilism. Then he gave it all up to teach mathematics. Lehrer is still alive at 96 – so I went in search of answers…

Weekly Roundup: Through the Gaetz of Hell (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

Brad begins with an analytical discussion of political nihilism in order to provide a window into the chaos in congress created by the ouster of Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

They then provide a historical timeline of government shutdowns and congressional chaos going back to the Tea Party.

For Dan, this is a long time coming – a populist revolt with no goal except for destruction.

For Brad, it is a matter of political fantasy and the refusal to live in a world of political complexity, negotiation, and disagreement.

‘What Is Broken in American Politics Is the Republican Party’ - POLITICO

A grown-up Republican Party — even a deeply conservative one — would accept the rule of law, the norms of liberal democracy, and the legitimacy of the opposing party. It would seek to represent all Americans and would prioritize winning converts over destroying heretics. It would be a governing party, understanding full well that governing is impossible without negotiation and compromise. It would accept America's responsibility to uphold the post-World War II global order. Its leadership would seek to address the real needs and problems of its working-class base while resisting the conspiracy theories, demagoguery and temptations toward political violence to which populism is all too susceptible.

Unfortunately, that's not the Republican Party we have. Instead, we have a party that prefers temper tantrums to governing, fantasies about stolen elections to the hard work of appealing to swing voters. It would rather destroy the federal bureaucracy than use it to implement conservative policies. Increasingly it poses a threat to national stability and world order. Kevin McCarthy did little to resist the feral direction of his party and much to indulge it. The next speaker will either find the courage to stand against this Republican nihilism or be consumed by it in turn…

Opinion | Peter Thiel says the GOP is offering nihilistic negation. He's right. - The Washington Post

While most of the party has been engaged in an everything-sucks, destroy-the-system campaign that is as dishonest as it is relentless, candidates bankrolled by Thiel have indeed been coming up with new ideas. They've floated enacting a federal "personhood" law (which would ban abortion even in cases of rape), privatizing Social Security and even replacing American democracy with something like a monarchy…
"Carl Marlinga made his living representing sexual predators. Now he wants to represent you," announces one ad, in Michigan, targeting a Democrat who worked as a judge, prosecutor and criminal-defense lawyer…

The Nihilism of MAGA World - The Atlantic

Joe Biden's "Soul of the Nation" address got at a cold and disquieting truth: The MAGA movement cannot be placated, reasoned with, or politically accommodated in any way. There is nothing its adherents want—and nothing anyone can give them—beyond chaos and political destruction...

Yearning for the end of the world | News | The Guardian

As a child in Iran, Dina Nayeri belonged to a secret Christian church where the Rapture was welcomed as a rescue. Later, as a refugee in the US, she saw how apocalyptic prophecies masked a reactionary nihilism – which is why they are so tempting....

Unrepentant Theocrats In Michigan Seek Church-State Union – And Monarchy

Stephen K. Bannon, a controversial adviser to President Donald J. Trump, yesterday laid out his plan to “deconstruct” (read: destroy) government during a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference.

The idea that you can simply blow up a government agency or program – even if it has been around for a long time, even if it works and even if people rely on it – seems to be much in vogue in right-wing quarters these days. Sadly, Bannon is far from the only one out there bent on nihilistic destruction....

Salon: Conservatism turned toxic: Donald Trump’s fanbase has no actual ideology, just a nihilistic hatred of liberals

The horror show that was the 2016 election will be examined and reexamined for years, and depending on how bad things get, quite likely decades to come. There were, of course, a lot of factors: Cultural change, economic change, racism, liberal complacency after Barack Obama, the FBI manipulating the election, the Russian government manipulating the election, hatred of feminism and so on.

But it's also important to notice that Donald Trump's election is the culmination of decades of right-wing media teaching its audience that liberals are subhuman scum, and that hating liberals — whatever their stereotype of a “liberal” looks like — is far more important that minor concerns like preventing war or economic destruction....

‘The U.S. Has Fallen Into a State of Political Nihilism’ - The Atlantic

Here’s a despairing email from a “U.S. Marine who has done multiple tours both in Iraq and Afghanistan since I joined the service in 2006, and I have never been more concerned for my country”:...
