Bari Weiss’s ascension to top of CBS News highlights the political winds driving US media rightward

Weiss has made her career as a center-right critic of progressivism, and the Free Press is a contrarian, loosely conservative and ardently Zionist publication that views itself as a speaker of hard truths and protector of free discourse. Tellingly, Weiss will answer directly to Paramount's chief executive, David Ellison, rather than to the president of CBS News, or the head of CBS.

Paramount's decision is a striking sign of US media giants' continued rightward drift – not least because Weiss's own recent career trajectory could be said to mirror the larger pendulum swing that has taken many corporate media companies from cautious allies of the anti-Trump "resistance" to fearful supplicants before a new Maga order...

Opinion | Pope Francis’s struggle against U.S. Catholic conservatives - The Washington Post

Francis is a world leader in combating climate change, and he insistently decries economic injustice and the treatment of migrants, while putting a new emphasis on the universal right to health care, housing and decent jobs. Though Francis is as opposed to abortion as any of his predecessors, he sees the issue as part of the entire package of Catholic teaching on protecting and promoting life. Indeed, in Portugal, Francis criticized the fixation on "sins below the waist" while "if you exploited workers, if you lied or cheated, it didn't matter."

Much of American church leadership, meanwhile, remains focused on a "pelvic theology" and is captive to the culture war mentality of today's political conservatism. This American cohort — embodied in the old guard leadership of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, networks such as EWTN and other influential groups — has money and media platforms, and they wield them to great effect...

He was a church official who criticized Trump. He says Christianity is in crisis : NPR

It was the result of having multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically, in their preaching — "turn the other cheek" — [and] to have someone come up after to say, "Where did you get those liberal talking points?" And what was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, "I'm literally quoting Jesus Christ," the response would not be, "I apologize." The response would be, "Yes, but that doesn't work anymore. That's weak." And when we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are seen as subversive to us, then we're in a crisis…

Why the Supreme Court Really Killed Roe v. Wade - POLITICO

Abortion opponents gained an ally in Leonard Leo, an attorney who had helped Thomas during his 1991 confirmation hearings. By 2001, Leo had become the head of the Federalist Society's lawyers' division, was profoundly opposed to legal abortion and wanted to dethrone the American Bar Association from its traditional role rating judicial nominees — which activists saw, as Leo put it, as rejecting conservative judges "on ideological grounds." In building new networks between movements and judges, and devising more sure-fire selection methods, Leo became both a patron and an entrepreneur…

Following the election of George W. Bush, Leo joined three other men in a group that called itself the Four Horsemen; the group included not only Republican legal veterans like C. Boyden Gray and Edwin Meese III but also prominent Christian conservative Jay Sekulow of the American Center for Law and Justice. Leo, who had long worked as a Republican Party liaison with Catholics, helped steer John Roberts' Supreme Court nomination through the Senate…

Leo, meanwhile, went on to gain further influence, helping choose the three Trump Supreme Court picks who would ultimately overturn Roe. The money has also flowed: He obtained a $1.6 billion donation last year from a wealthy conservative businessman named Barre Seid for his legal network, likely the largest political gift in American history…

A critical facet of this story is that a number of conservative grassroots objectives are broadly unpopular, from the recognition of an almost unlimited right to bear arms to the recognition of fetal personhood that would make abortion unconstitutional nationwide. This is an important reason why judicial entrenchment is so attractive to minoritarian interests: They can win by appealing to a handful of judges even when they lose decisively and repeatedly through the political process…

New electric cars won’t have AM radio. Rightwingers claim political sabotage

Tesla, BMW, Audi, and Volvo have already dispensed with AM in their electric cars, because AM's already unpolished reception is subject to even more buzz, crackling, and interference when installed near an electric motor. While some manufacturers have found workarounds for the interference, others appear to have decided that it's not worth the engineering expense…

Ted Cruz, while promoting a federal bill that would require automakers to install AM radios in new cars, claimed he smelled something fishy: "There's a reason big car companies were open to taking down AM radio … let's be clear: big business doesn't like things that are overwhelmingly conservative."…

Opinion | The Largest and Fastest Religious Shift in America Is Well Underway - The New York Times

It's complicated and multifaceted, but to summarize, it's largely a combination of Christianity's association with far-right politics and the fact that being unreligious has become more socially acceptable over time...

The American right’s future involves waging a 'religious battle' against the left, leaders say at a conservative conference

National conservatism is far from the mainline conservative ideology espoused in Washington, D.C., and on the campaign trail, but it is ascending within the GOP. But rather than celebrating their momentum, these conservatives raised concern over the sense that their views are underrepresented not only in elected government, but across the federal bureaucracy, in corporate boardrooms, on major online platforms and in the military. Meanwhile, the broader American left was repeatedly denounced as the "enemy" and a "regime" with "evil" ideas.
"I firmly believe that we American Christians — and in truth, Americans of any traditional faith and convictions — that we're now living in exile," right-wing writer Rod Dreher said in his address, adding, "We don't know how much time we have before the persecution starts. But we can be confident that it is likely to come."…

Opinion | Hate and white supremacy are now fixtures of American conservatism - The Washington Post

Max Boot, conservative ex-Republican, writes: "Little wonder that a poll taken in December found that nearly half of all Republicans believe that there is a plot to "replace" native-born Americans with immigrants. Fox talking heads and Republican politicians have mainstreamed white supremacist ideology…"
