No, Biden did not defy a Supreme Court order - The Washington Post

If Biden had in fact defied the Supreme Court, his critics could have asked judges to hold him and his administration in contempt, touching off a true constitutional crisis. There's a reason none of that ever happened.

Understanding the federal government’s influence on student debt - The Washington Post

As the Clinton administration and others found out when they sought to bypass corrupt middlemen by lending directly to students, the loan system proved too big to dismantle. When the middlemen overreached, the lending companies and proprietary schools could declare bankruptcy to escape some creditors, but student borrowers could not. They were stuck. That is, until very recently, when President Joe Biden announced the cancellation of millions of loans — though his latest plans have been blocked by the courts…

Navient Will Cancel Private Student Loans. Most Don’t Know About It. - The New York Times

More than a million borrowers who were defrauded by for-profit schools have had billions of dollars in federal student loans eliminated through a government aid program. But people with private loans have generally been excluded from any relief — until recently.

Navient, a large owner of private student loan debt, has created, but not publicized, a program that allows borrowers to apply to have their loans forgiven...

After Supreme Court ruling, Biden cancels student loan debt for millions of borrowers | PBS NewsHour

…today's move will provide relief to nurses, teachers and other public service employees who have been working for at least 10 years. It also includes forgiveness for some borrowers who have been making loan repayments for 20 years, but never got the relief they were entitled to under existing programs.

And earlier this week, the administration said it will move up the start date of a new student loan repayment program from July to February. So far, the Biden administration says it's erased more than $130 billion in loans for 3.7 million borrowers…

Opinion | Student Loan Repayments Are Dwindling - The New York Times

In recent years, many Americans with student loans weren't making enough money to pay even the accumulating interest on their debt, let alone make progress on the principal. Wage stagnation is a long-running phenomenon that worsened after the Great Recession.

But an important additional source of student loan misery is the widening and diversifying nature of the Americans who take them out. It's increasingly the case that people who were always going to have low earnings no matter their educational attainment are also overloaded with student debt — think of underpaid teachers who acquired expensive master's degrees for only a modest pay increase.

How Supreme Court decisions are activating a generation of young voters - The Washington Post

For many voters under 35 years of age, especially those on the left, the Supreme Court has become a political issue in the same way that climate change, gun violence and immigration have over the course of the past two decades, some political scientists and organizers have said.

Conversations with more than a dozen young voters from around the country who recently visited Washington for the Fourth of July suggest a sense of frustration, even resignation for some, but also a renewed understanding that their votes could impact which justices sit on the federal bench...

Sanders Statement on Supreme Court Overturning Student Debt Cancellation

" If Republicans could provide trillions of dollars in tax breaks to the top one percent and profitable corporations, if they could cancel hundreds of billions in loans for wealthy business owners during the pandemic when Trump was President and if they could vote to spend $886 billion on the Pentagon, please don't tell me that we cannot afford to cancel student debt for working families. …"

‘This you?’: the seven letters exposing rightwing hypocrisy

…Marjorie Taylor Greene said it was "completely unfair" for the government to "say your debt is completely forgiven" – after her loan of more than $180,000 was forgiven, the official White House account noted. It was just one of a series of digs at critics: the Florida congressman Matt Gaetz, the White House said, had more than $482,000 in PPP loans forgiven, while the Pennsylvania congressman Mike Kelly got off the hook for more than $987,000…

Secretary Tom Vilsack On USDA Debt Forgiveness For Black Farmers (The 1A)

Starting June 1, the Department of Agriculture will pay out thousands of dollars in loan forgiveness to Black and minority farmers in a bid to correct for more than a century of discrimination.

More than $4 billion dollars from the American Rescue Plan have been allocated for the program.

But it’s already getting pushback from banks, Republican lawmakers, and white farmers. A lawsuit calling the program “unconstitutional” is currently making its way through the courts.

We talk to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack about the historic – if controversial – program.

American Federation of Teachers sues Betsy DeVos over public service loan forgiveness program - The Washington Post

The American Federation of Teachers, one of the country’s biggest teachers unions, sued Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Thursday alleging gross mismanagement of a loan forgiveness program for public servants. “This program was not supposed to be negotiable or debatable. It is a right under law. It shouldn’t be a crapshoot, but under Betsy DeVos, that is exactly what it’s become,” American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said on a call with reporters.....
