GOP uses debunked theory to downplay COVID-19 death toll | TheHill
Top Republicans are seeking to downplay the heavy toll of the coronavirus, in part by pointing to a conspiracy theory that the number of deaths is much lower.
President Trump, along with Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and Rep. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), who are both in competitive Senate races, have all pointed in recent days to the widely debunked theory that COVID-19 deaths in the United States total just 10,000 instead of the more than 180,000 recorded by health officials. ...

Coronavirus death toll 'acceptable,' 57% of Republicans say in poll
Americans view the severity of the coronavirus pandemic and the effectiveness of the government's response through a very partisan lens, a CBS News/YouGov poll released Sunday found.
More than 176,000 people in the U.S. have died from COVID-19. According to the poll, a 57% majority of registered Republican voters consider that number "acceptable" when "evaluating the U.S. efforts against the coronavirus pandemic," compared with 31% of voters overall. Ninety percent of Democrats and 67% of independents said the death toll was "unacceptable."

Confused Trump can't understand how many Americans are dying of coronavirus in shocking interview
Several of the moments in Donald Trump’s interview with Jonathan Swan of Axios have gone viral for good reason, but the extended clip where the two men argue about how well the U.S. is doing when it comes to coronavirus cases is especially jaw-dropping—and informative. As Swan presses Trump on the terrible outcomes in the U.S., we get to to see how Trump’s mind works, beat by beat. It is, of course, terrifying. ....

Fauci says US death toll 'going to be very disturbing' and fears 100,000 daily cases
Dr Anthony Fauci, the top US infectious disease expert, has said the country could see 100,000 new coronavirus cases daily unless action is taken to reverse the epidemic. Fauci warned that the US is “going in the wrong direction” over handling the coronavirus, and said the death toll “is going to be very disturbing”. ....

Social distancing a week earlier could have saved 36,000 US lives, study finds
Had the US begun social distancing just one week earlier, the country would have prevented 36,000 deaths through early May, according to researchers at Columbia University. Had action been taken two weeks earlier, by 1 March, 54,000 fewer Americans would have died of the virus, the researchers determined.....

'All the psychoses of US history': how America is victim-blaming the coronavirus dead
Why do Americans represent less than 5% of the world’s population but nearly a third of the known coronavirus death toll? Not because of government incompetence, the Trump administration is arguing, but because Americans are very unhealthy.....

Florida Gov. DeSantis accused of changing COVID-19 numbers to make reopening seem more reasonable
From the beginning of the novel coronavirus story, there have been legitimate concerns over whether China was accurately reporting its number of cases or its rate of deaths. In Russia, what appears to be an astonishingly low COVID-19 mortality rate is made more than a little suspect by the way that defenestration remains at the top of that nation’s charts.
But you don’t have to travel around the world to find inaccurate reporting on either cases or deaths related to COVID-19. Georgia has been repeatedly rearranging—or simply altering—reported numbers to make it seem as if things there are getting better. (They’re not.) For weeks, Florida has suspended the reporting of deaths by medical examiners, even as those examiners complain that the state tally doesn’t match their information.....

Stay-at-home orders saved hundreds of thousands, report finds | TheHill
A new analysis says nearly 250,000 people in the nation's 30 largest cities are alive today because of strict stay-at-home orders issued by local and state governments.
The report, from the Urban Health Collaborative at the Dornsife School of Public Health at Drexel University, found the stay-at-home orders likely reduced the number of coronavirus deaths by 232,878 and prevented 2.1 million people from requiring hospitalization.

America is dying to reelect Trump | TheHill
We should have seen it coming. This week, several media outlets reported that the Trump administration was pushing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to revise coronavirus fatalities downward. The White House wanted to exclude from the totals individuals who did not have confirmed lab results for COVID-19 but were presumed to be positive and those for whom the coronavirus may not have been the direct cause of death. The next step, we can assume, will be a tweet by President Trump declaring that the death count (tabulated by the CDC) is “fake news,” part of a conspiracy by Democrats and the Deep State to defeat him in November by keeping the economy on its knees.

There Are Sensible Ways to Reopen. Then There's the US's Way | Time
This brutal spring, the U.S. faces two great crises. Over the past 14 weeks, 84,000 Americans have died of COVID-19.
That’s 28 times the death toll of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, more than the U.S. combat deaths in the Vietnam War, and one-quarter of the total global casualties from the coronavirus pandemic. ....

The numbers reveal how much Trump’s dithering worsened the COVID-19 crisis – Raw Story
Thousands continue to die each day in the United States from COVID-19, and there’s no sign yet that the virus will fully retreat anytime soon. But new analysis from two epidemiologists published in the New York Times on Thursday showed that it didn’t have to be this way. Had the country acted sooner, it could have dramatically decreased the death toll.

Trump supporters are already questioning coronavirus death toll to make the president look good – Raw Story
Some prominent Trump-supporting media personalities are already trying to defend the president’s response to the coronavirus pandemic by questioning the official number of people who have died after being infected.
As documented by Media Matters researcher Jason Campbell, right-wing radio host Mark Levin this week suggested that the official coronavirus body count tallies shouldn’t be taken at face value because there’s no way of knowing whether someone who died shortly after getting infected really died from the virus....
