Panetta Slams Trump's Russia Comments: 'It's Deadly Serious'

Leon Panetta, the former CIA director and Defense secretary, slammed Donald Trump and the comments that he made Wednesday suggesting the Russians should hack Hillary Clinton's emails and release them publicly.

"In my over 50 years in public life, this is the screwiest damn election I've ever seen," Panetta said.

After noting that he had served under nine presidents, Republican and Democratic, Panetta said, "This is the first election where there's only one candidate who has the experience, temperament, the understanding of the world to be commander-in-chief."

Panetta was speaking at a national security panel hosted at the University of Pennsylvania in conjunction with the Democratic convention.

"The other candidate doesn't have any experience, doesn't know the world, shoots from the hip," Panetta continued. "He shot from the hip today in asking for Russians to do a cyber attack against the United States, for God's sakes."...

Why Trump Fails—and Clinton Passes—the Commander-in-Chief Test

Three months ago, my former boss and mentor, retired Defense Secretary Bob Gates, questioned whether Donald Trump has the temperament to be president. While I fully share Secretary Gates’ concerns about Trump’s disposition, I am equally troubled by the Republican nominee’s views on national security, which he laid out again at a startling news conference on Wednesday, including the bizarre claim that “NATO changed their whole program because of me” and he might let Russia keep Crimea. He also appeared to call upon Moscow to launch another cyber-invasion of the U.S. so as to find Hillary Clinton’s "30,000 emails that are missing."

America today faces three principal national security threats: from radical Islamists, who seek to terrorize Americans and overthrow the existing order in the Middle East; from a resurgent Russia, which seeks to reassert its dominance over the former Soviet Empire and overthrow the existing order in Europe; and from a rising China, which seeks suzerainty in Asia. In all three areas, Trump has shown a limited grasp of the nature of the threat and has proposed strategies that would make America less secure....

Obama On Trump: 'President Who Doesn't Know Their Stuff' Is 'Scary'

During an interview with NBC's "Today" that aired Wednesday morning, President Obama said that it is worrisome that Donald Trump has put little effort into learning about certain issues.

NBC's Savannah Guthrie asked Obama if he was concerned about the prospect of Trump having the nuclear codes.

"What I think is scary is a president who doesn’t know their stuff and doesn’t seem to have an interest in learning what they don’t know," Obama said in response.

"I think if you listen to any press conference he’s given or listen to any of those debates, basic knowledge about the world, or what a nuclear triad is, or where various countries are, or the difference between Sunni and Shi'ia in the Muslim world, those are things that he doesn’t know and hasn’t seemed to spend a lot of time trying to find out," he continued....

Donald Trump's Top Ten Giveaways to Vladimir Putin

The number of pro-Putin positions that Donald Trump has taken has assumed quite remarkable proportions. He:

1 Wants to reduce America's commitment to NATO and reorient its activities to the Middle East. This is perhaps Vladmir Putin's greatest foreign policy desire.
2  Says America has no moral standing to complain about human and civil rights violations.
3 Welcomed Russia's incursion into Syria.
4 Considers Putin a great leader.
5 Would consider eliminating sanctions against Russia and recognizing their annexation of Crimea.
6 Wants to weaken American ties to its allies by insisting that he will walk away from them unless they pay us more for our military protection.
7 Never mentions Russia in his otherwise endless litany of countries that are taking advantage of us. 8 Opposes sending arms to Ukraine.
9 Is pro-Brexit.
10 Isn't sure he would defend the Baltics if Russia attacked them.

Have I missed anything? I probably have. It's hard to keep track....

Donald Trump Takes 3 Different Positions On The Minimum Wage In Less Than 30 Seconds

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has taken a variety of positions on the minimum wage during his campaign, and Tuesday night was no different. This time though, his changing stances came much closer together than normal.

In an interview with Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly, Trump took three different positions on the issue in less than 30 seconds.

When O’Reilly said to Trump, “There has to be a federal minimum wage. What would you set the federal minimum wage at?” Trump’s immediate response was, “There doesn’t have to be,” suggesting that he believes there doesn’t have to be a federal minimum wage at all.

But with his very next breath Trump went on to say, “I would leave it and raise it somewhat. You need to help people, and I know it’s not very Republican to say.” That would indicate that he believes that the wage needs to be raised because wages are too low.

And yet when Bill O’Reilly asked specifically what Trump thought of a $10 federal minimum wage, Trump responded, “I would say ten. I would say ten… But the thing is we’ll let the states do it.”...

Elizabeth Warren’s Devastating Trump Hit: She Drew a Straight Line from Jim Crow to Donald Trump

The Democratic National Convention got off to about as rough a start as you could imagine, with the party committee chair abruptly resigning and her replacementfending off choruses of boos from delegates loyal to Bernie Sanders. But the proceedings eventually settled down and the acrimony steadily waned as the primetime slate of speakers all turned in strong performances. There are plenty of potential highlights to choose from, but there was one passage from Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s speech that stood out to me as one of the more effective and damning indictments of GOP nominee Donald Trump offered up thus far.

Warren’s speech had all the familiar attacks on Trump that we’ve all heard countless times already – he cons people out of their money, he’s filed for bankruptcy several times, he’s a predatory goon who celebrated the 2008 collapse of the real estate market, etc. But after laying all that out, Warren delved into “the really ugly underside” to Trumpism:...

Donald Trump Jr. says unemployment rates are manipulated for political purposes

Are the unemployment numbers being manipulated to make the Obama administration look good?

That was the contention of Donald Trump Jr., son of the Republican presidential nominee, during the July 24 edition of CNN's State of the Union.

Trump was making a point frequently made by his father — that the official unemployment rate is lower than it should be because it doesn't take into account the people who would like a job but have stopped looking....

The General Election Opposition That Will Finally Stop Trump: Women Voters

It’s been a little over a year since Donald Trump came down a flight of escalators to greet a crowd of supporters. You probably weren’t watching that day. If you were, you probably laughed it off as a joke. I wouldn’t blame you, because back then we had “serious” candidates to focus on — like Jeb Bush and Scott Walker.

No one could have imagined then that Donald Trump would be the GOP nominee for president. It just seemed so improbable. From his very first speech as a presidential candidate, where he called Mexicans “rapists,” to each and every degrading remark it was revealed he’d made about a woman’s physical appearance, Trump’s unstable rhetoric would have spelled catastrophe for any other candidate....

Comedian, author, and atheist Julia Sweeney was raised Catholic, with a God who, in her mind, "was like a really loving uncle." New Gas Infrastructure Is Going To Completely Undermine U.S. Climate Goals

The climate action movement has gotten a lot of wins during the Obama administration.

The Keystone XL pipeline permit denial. The Clean Power Plan. The proposed methane rules. These things are all part of an effort to limit carbon emissions and avoid the most catastrophic effects of climate change.

But, as it turns out, these actions are not enough....

Immigrants Told To ‘Get In Line’ Are Waiting For Years Because Of Court Case Backlog

Critics often tell immigrants to “get in line” to legally stay in the United States — but the only line in place spans years, as there are now more than half a million cases backlogged in the federal immigration court system.

Based on new Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) findings by the Associated Press, the total number of immigration cases still pending has reached 500,051 — a number driven by Central American mothers and children who began arriving at the southern U.S. border beginning in late 2013.

Immigration courts have been inundated with cases after the Obama administration prioritized and expedited court hearings for Central Americans in a process critically called a “rocket docket,” which gives lawyers and immigrants little time to gather evidence to support their claims for humanitarian relief....

Hell, Our National Crisis Isn’t Really About Trump—It’s About What’s Happening to the American People

As Darryl Glenn, a Republican candidate for the US Senate from Colorado, fired up the Republican National Convention against Hillary Clinton this week by saying, “We know she enjoys her pantsuits, but we should send her an email telling her what she deserves is a bright orange jumpsuit,” I pictured the beheadings of western foreign-aid workers in orange jumpsuits, as Glenn surely meant us to do, and I wondered why this black herald of a new Republican Party didn’t say that Barack Obama deserves to be lynched.

Glenn’s audience went wild at his jumpsuit suggestion, leaping and shouting in an unintended demonstration that our national crisis isn’t really about Trump; it’s about what’s happening to the American people. What’s happening to us is what’s being done to us, and Trump, the outsider-insider, is exposing it more vividly than Clinton has done....
