Blow to hard right as Geert Wilders’s PVV loses seats in Dutch election - The Washington Post

Blow to hard right as Geert Wilders's PVV loses seats in Dutch election - The Washington Post

Wednesday's election became a microcosm of competing visions in the West, with Wilders representing a staunchly anti-migrant and populist view in line with the U.S. MAGA movement and far-right parties across Europe, including France's National Rally.

Jetten's party embraced optimism, the politics of civility, affordable housing and a green agenda. "The positive forces have won!" Jetten posted on X. "I want to get to work for all Dutch people, because this is the land of us all!"

Could Amsterdam's New Economic Theory Replace Capitalism? | Time

... In April 2020, during the first wave of COVID-19, Amsterdam's city government announced it would recover from the crisis, and avoid future ones, by embracing the theory of "doughnut economics." Laid out by British economist Kate Raworth in a 2017 book, the theory argues that 20th century economic thinking is not equipped to deal with the 21st century reality of a planet teetering on the edge of climate breakdown. Instead of equating a growing GDP with a successful society, our goal should be to fit all of human life into what Raworth calls the "sweet spot" between the "social foundation," where everyone has what they need to live a good life, and the "environmental ceiling." By and large, people in rich countries are living above the environmental ceiling. Those in poorer countries often fall below the social foundation. The space in between: that's the doughnut...

Pete Hoekstra, U.S. ambassador to Netherlands, accused of hosting fundraiser for FvD at embassy - The Washington Post

Dutch officials demanded answers from Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands, on Tuesday in light of reports that the Trump appointee had held a private event for a rising right-wing political party and its donors at the U.S. Embassy in The Hague earlier this month. On Monday, Dutch magazine De Groene Amsterdammer published a detailed description of the Sept. 10 gathering, attended by a large group of Forum for Democracy (FvD) members and supporters in the business community, bringing it to widespread attention.....

Trump's ambassador to Netherlands finally admits 'no-go zone' claims - BBC News

Mr Hoekstra, a Republican congressman appointed to the envoy's job by Donald Trump, last month denied making the claims, calling them "fake news", despite being shown video evidence. Confronted by Dutch journalists at a disastrous first press conference on Wednesday, he refused to answer questions about his comments.

On Friday Mr Hoekstra finally admitted to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that he had made the remarks, to a right wing gathering in the US, and said he was "shocked" by them....

Dutch reporter catches Hoekstra peddling ‘fake news’

A Dutch journalist confronted former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, now the U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands, about his false claim in 2015 that Muslims have made some parts of the Netherlands inaccessible, where cars and even politicians are “being burned.”

Questioned on camera by reporter Wouter Zwart, a correspondent for the news program Nieuwsuur, about the existence of “no-go zones,” Hoekstra denied having made the statements, calling it “fake news.”....

Wind power now runs all electric passenger trains in the Netherlands

All of the electric passenger trains running in the Netherlands are now powered entirely by wind. One year ahead of schedule, Dutch railway company NS announced its entire electric train fleet is running on 100-percent wind power as of January 1, 2017, ushering in a new era of green transportation. Renewable energy advocates hope the early success will inspire planners to incorporate wind-powered trains in other high-speed rail projects around the world, including some proposed in the United States.
