Gen Z helped to stop the ‘red wave’ in the midterms. The Republicans’ response? Try to raise the voting age

The fact that young people don't like them very much hasn't bypassed the Republican party. Instead of rethinking their policies, however, some of them have decided to rethink the voting age. Over the last few days, a lot of Republicans have been proclaiming that the US ought to increase the legal voting age to 21. (One conservative radio personality even suggested it be raised to 28.) The same people who reckon a 10-year-old girl is mature enough to be forced to carry a baby, reckon a 20-year-old isn't mature enough to vote…

Inside the unhinged midterm election conspiracy theories on Truth Social

In recent days, despite users' apparent satisfaction with Truth Social, the main interest has been Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter, and how it might impact the Democratic party in elections and beyond. Musk's vague promise to overturn Twitter bans has had people giddy with excitement, claiming it could open the door to a glorious era of Republican reign.
"Democrats are not going to be able to handle free speech and the corrupt Democratic Party will fall apart after hearing the truth," one Truth Social user gravely intoned after Musk purchased Twitter…

'Hand-to-hand combat with the Left': Recordings show Trump-funded lawyer Cleta Mitchell readying for midterm elections - ABC News

Mitchell's reference to "hand-to-hand combat" also comes as officials are increasingly worried about the possibility of violence on Election Day. In Colorado, officials are so concerned about threats to election workers that some staffers have been outfitted with bulletproof vests...

‘I’m deadly serious’: why filmmaker Michael Moore is confident of a Democratic midterm win | US midterm elections 2022 | The Guardian

Moore predicts the election will see a record turnout of younger voters whose views pundits and commentators often miss. "If you spend any time with women, the Dobbs decision struck them personally and deeply. This was a religious edict based on conservative Catholic principles."…

What are midterm elections and why are they important? - The Washington Post

The next big national elections are coming up in November. President Biden won't be on the ballot, but the people elected to Congress and state and local offices will have a big impact on what he can get done for the remainder of his first term — and on American life over the next couple of years.
These elections are called "midterms" (as in, they happen right in the middle of a presidential term). Here's what you need to know to understand the news about them...

Pay very close attention to state court contests; it’s about more than elections | The Hill

There is no better contemporary example of the political significance of a state supreme court than Michigan. In 2020, the Democrats won a majority for the first time in more than two decades. "That has been a huge deal," notes Bill Ballenger, publisher of the Ballenger Report on Michigan politics. He expects the two justices up for election this year — one a Democrat the other a Republican — will win, with Democrats retaining their 4-3 majority.
With the Dobbs decision, Michigan was slated to revert to a 1931 law banning abortions. That was thrown out by a Michigan judge. A few days ago, the Michigan supreme court, over the objections of some Republicans, approved putting an abortion rights referendum on the November ballot…

Opinion | Bill Kristol warns: The GOP under Trump can't be saved - The Washington Post

Can Trump's continued domination of the news cycle, and the intensifying revelations about his lawlessness, alienate a small but meaningful enough fraction of GOP-leaning voters to affect the outcome?
The Republican Accountability Project, which is chaired by Never Trumper and conservative movement veteran Bill Kristol, is betting that it's possible. A PAC linked to the group is spending money to try to defeat more than a dozen of the Trumpiest GOP candidates, those who support the "big lie" such as Doug Mastriano and Kari Lake, who are running for governor in Pennsylvania and Arizona...

2022 Midterms: Over 80 State Supreme Court Seats Are on the Ballot

… Justices for state supreme courts decide whether to overturn lengthy prison sentences, hand down multimillion-dollar civil judgments, hold powerful corporations like pharmaceutical companies and tech giants to account, establishing legal precedent on key issues along the way. And they're set to play an even more active role in key issues like redistricting, election and voting laws, abortion access, gun rights, and education policy…

Campaigning AOC electrifies crowds as Democrats fear brutal midterms

"AOC's superpower is to expose and shed light on corruption and injustices that have been longstanding," Epting said. "I think she has been one of the most electrifying members of Congress, probably in the history of the United States. And she's a true champion for people."
