Feds call child abuse confession law for priests "anti-Catholic" as church vows to excommunicate those who comply - CBS News
Gov. Mike Ferguson signed the controversial bill into law last week, making it mandatory for all clergy to report child abuse, without exemptions for information disclosed during confession. Confessions were previously considered privileged.
The Archdiocese of Seattle — which was made up of 160 priests and 90 permanent deacons as of 2024 — said it will excommunicate priests who comply with the legislation…

Trump and Congress are skipping out on the bill for mass deportations
"So law enforcement officers can now arrest someone they suspect of being a non-citizen and claim that the person admitted that they committed one of the designated offenses. That person can then be taken into federal custody without ever filing a charge in state court.
This violates one of the oldest rules of evidence: A person cannot be convicted of an offense based solely on their confession. The rule is designed to discourage officers from trying to extract confessions from someone when they have no other evidence of their guilt…"

The priest's confession: What the Catholic bishops knew - The Fifth Estate
In 2015, retired Catholic priest Paul-André Harvey from Quebec's Chicoutimi diocese pleaded guilty to 39 charges of indecent assault and gross indecency. Most of his victims were girls between the ages of eight and 10. Harvey was sentenced to six years in prison.
But before Harvey died in prison, the defrocked priest did something extraordinary — he provided a confession for his victims to use in a class-action suit against the Catholic Church.
