The biggest surprise from John Durham's testimony to the House
That's not to say that the day was completely pointless. Durham confirmed under Democratic questioning that current Attorney General Merrick Garland didn't interfere with his investigation or tell him that any potential targets were off-limits. He admitted that the reason that former President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton still walk free, no matter how much Trumpworld wants them behind bars, is that there's simply no evidence of wrongdoing. Likewise, none of the three individuals he did prosecute, two of whom were acquitted, were accused of taking part in a supposed "deep state" plot to take down Trump. It's a far cry from when the former president was promising that Durham's probe would reveal "the crime of the century."…

Former prosecutors blasted the report as nothing more than an extended Op-ed. Rather than do what special counsels are charged with — explain the reasons for indictment or for declining to indict — Durham simply regurgitated right-wing accusations that the FBI was harder on Trump than on former secretary of state Hillary Clinton. Worse, his report displays the very confirmation bias he tried to pin on the FBI.
Moreover, Durham actually found there was evidence sufficient to begin at least a preliminary investigation. Former prosecutor and MSNBC legal analyst Barbara McQuade tweeted that Durham ignored the legitimate reasons to open an investigation in 2016 "based on information received from Australian diplomats about Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos." Durham also didn't seem concerned with multiple contacts between Russians and the Trump campaign or Trump's infamous "Russia, if you're listening …" statement. McQuade added, "Durham criticizes the FBI for relying on the Steele Dossier for the Carter Page FISA. Steele Dossier was not the basis for opening the investigation, but it makes for a useful scapegoat to blur that fact."…

And the article detailed how Mr. Barr had Mr. Durham hunted for evidence that intelligence abuses lurked in the origins of the Russia inquiry. After that turned into a dead end, they kept the investigation going by shifting to searching for a basis to accuse Hillary Clinton's campaign of framing Mr. Trump for colluding with Russia.
Mr. Durham never charged such a conspiracy, but he used court filings to insinuate that there had been one, which Mr. Barr — no longer in office — publicly cheered. Mr. Lieu and Mr. Goldman wrote that "charging individuals with crimes in order to pursue separate political narratives undermines our rule of law and represents a gross abuse of power."…

It states that an attorney for an internet company that was collecting data related to White House communications from 2016 to early 2017 also served as an attorney for the Clinton campaign. It does not say that the Clinton campaign directed these activities. And it does not assert that the data was gathered illegally or that it was collected while Trump was president…

(In fact, this appears to be why the White House was sharing the data; it was a response to a Russian infiltration in 2015.)…
