History Minute (059): Why Lee suddenly surrendered

As relayed by Zinn:

Simply by stopping work, the 4 million enslaved people had tremendous power because they could threaten the Confederacy with starvation at a time when hundreds of thousands of soldiers had been killed and war fatigue was high. Lee had two options: Either the South must free its slaves and use them to fight the North — and thereby make it impossible to benefit from slave labor in the future — or the South must surrender to the North on the assumption that after the war, they could resume enslavement practices.

Quoting Zinn:
George Rawick, a sociologist and anthropologist, describes the development of blacks up to and into the Civil War:

"The slaves went from being frightened human beings, thrown among strange men, including fellow slaves who were not their kinsmen and who did not speak their language or understand their customs and habits, to what W. E. B. DuBois once described as the general strike whereby hundreds of thousands of slaves deserted the plantations, destroying the South's ability to supply its army."

Israel-Iran conflict at critical juncture as Trump demands Tehran’s ‘unconditional surrender’ | Iran | The Guardian

But France's president, Emmanuel Macron, urged restraint, saying: "We recognize Israel's right to self-defense, but we do not support actions that threaten stability in the region. The biggest mistake that can be made today is to try to change the regime in Iran by military means – because that would lead to chaos."…

Israel's justification for its shock attack on Iran was called into question on Tuesday when CNN cited US intelligence assessments as saying that when Iran was attacked, it had been "up to three years away from being able to produce and deliver [a nuclear bomb] to a target of its choosing".

The report echoed a public assessment in March by Trump's own director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, who told Congress "Iran is not building a nuclear weapon" and the supreme leader "has not authorised the nuclear weapons program that he suspended in 2003"…

Vladimir Putin says Ukraine must surrender after Donald Trump calls for soldiers to be spared - ABC News

"Putin is lying about the real situation on the battlefield, he is lying about the casualties, he is lying about the true state of his economy, which has been damaged by his foolish imperial ambitions, and he is doing everything possible to ensure that diplomacy fails," he said.

"Putin cannot exit this war because that would leave him with nothing," he continued. "That is why he is now doing everything he can to sabotage diplomacy by setting extremely difficult and unacceptable conditions right from the start even before a ceasefire."

ISIS Fighters, Having Pledged to Fight or Die, Surrender en Masse - The New York Times

The prisoners were taken to a waiting room in groups of four, and were told to stand facing the concrete wall, their noses almost touching it, their hands bound behind their backs. More than a thousand prisoners determined to be Islamic State fighters passed through that room last week after they fled their crumbling Iraqi stronghold of Hawija. Instead of the martyrdom they had boasted was their only acceptable fate, they had voluntarily ended up here in the interrogation center of the Kurdish authorities in northern Iraq.....

Alexei Bayer: America's surrender summit | KyivPost

A country doesn’t have to be defeated on the battlefield in order to lose a war. In November 1918, Germany capitulated with its army still largely intact and no enemy boots on its soil. In 1989-91, the Soviet Empire collapsed without a single shot being fired, and Russia effectively admitted that it lost the Cold War. These two acts of surrender, though inevitable, later came to be regarded as betrayals in Weimar Germany and post-communist Russia.

Donald Trump’s visit to Europe in early July 2017 will also enter history books as a journey of American surrender, a humiliating defeat inflicted by a once-great nation upon itself when it was still a leading global economy and formidable military power....
