As Team Trump wage unceasing war on Iran, evangelical nationalists are destroying any moral world order we once had

Despite Trump's apocalyptic rhetoric, and sensational online talk about "end times" and Armageddon, this immensely damaging, unjustified and shaming war may be forcing Americans to reassess their moral relationship with the world. Is Trump solely to blame? wondered the US columnist Lydia Polgreen. Or is he "the fulfilment of what America has always been – a self-satisfied nation, granted license by its myths about providence and exceptionalism to do whatever it wants". Trump's presidency, she argued, "has revealed a much older malady: America's unshakable faith in its ability to shape the world to its liking, indifferent to what others might want and supremely confident that its plan is the right one. Beyond Trump, it's this disfiguring mentality we Americans must face."…

What would happen if every state acted like Donald Trump’s America?

Trump's imperialist order also seems unduly focused on military power. The US economy thrives in significant part through global investments and trade. But that requires respect for the international law that Trump derides. Otherwise, contracts could be broken willy-nilly. Investments can be seized. Business personnel can be held hostage. Already the Trump administration is urging Americans to flee Venezuela for fear of kidnapping by armed paramilitaries. 

Trump would undoubtedly hope to deter such lawlessness, but a lawless defense of law is hard to pull off, and even American power has its limits.

A Fox News anchor briefly paused mid-segment on Saturday after a sign carried by a demonstrator at the so-called “Million MAGA March” in Washington, D.C. appeared on the screen bearing a racist threat. Fox anchor Eric Shawn broke from his conversation with a Republican strategist to say, “We’ve just seen a very disturbing sign. It said, ‘Coming for Blacks and Indians first welcome to the New World Order.’ Who the hell knows, you know, what people have and what they say on these things?” The march, intended to show support for President Donald Trump and his false claims that he won the presidential election, drew a significantly smaller crowd than a million people, with attendees numbering in the thousands.
