History Minute (084): KKK concept of the Nordic noble race

The Ku Klux Klan combined its concept of race with contemporary thought about eugenics -- good genes versus bad ones. Klansmen religious nationalist talk about the past is frequently in terms of inherited "Nordic-ness".  White Americans -- at least those of Nordic descent, as a certain percentage of Anglos are thought to be -- are part of a "noble race". In their view, God intentionally gave America to this noble race of superior white men for the purpose of their rebirth and expansion. God has destined them to save white civilization.

Members of this noble race of superior white men can be identified, in their thinking, by their "Nordic" traits: wavy brown or blond hair; light skin; eyes that are blue, grey, or biscuit; a nose that is symmetrical; a sturdy physique; and a skull that is relatively long, with a width of less than 80% of its length. Such people might come typically from eastern Germany, Poland, and Russia, as well as eastern Ukraine -- though not every person from these lands are members of the "noble race".

Members of this Nordic "noble race" allegedly created ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, both of which declined due to intermarriage with non-Nordic people. They say further, that when the Roman Empire fell, it was Nordic Goths who acquired the science, literature, and aesthetics of the Roman Empire and supposedly initiated the Renaissance. They assert that all the great minds of this era -- Dante, Michelangelo, da Vinci, etc. -- were racially Nordic. In our time, they claim that the vast majority of people of the British Isles belong to the Nordic race -- most especially Scotland, where the race is thought to be most pure.

Why Humanity Must Overcome Religion | Carl Sagan

In this video, Carl Sagan explores the vastness of the universe, the power of science, and the limitations of religious belief. He emphasizes the importance of skepticism, evidence, and the scientific method in shaping humanity’s future, while questioning the role of faith and mythology in understanding our place in the cosmos.

The SHOCKING Origins of Jesus MIRACLES | MythVision Documentary

Most Christians read the New Testament and listen to their teachers about Jesus miracles believing that they are historical acts from the 1st century. Some go further and think miracles are still happening today, but what may come as a shock to most Christians is that Jesus wasn't the first or only miracle worker. In fact, there are several other miracle workers who were far more popular in the Greek and Roman world at the time the New Testament was being written. These Gods include Hercules, Ascepius and Isis, but that's not all. There were also several mortal men we call hero's who also "supposedly" performed miracles according to their sources. These hero's include Pythagoras & his disciple Empedocles, King Pyrrhus, Caesar Augustus, Vespasian, Apollonius of Tyana, Asclepiades, Moses, Elijah and Elisha. We literally go over the primary sources which you can go see for yourself. Many of these Gods and heroes raised the dead, gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, mobility to the crippled, and health to the diseased. This seems to be a well established trope within the broader Greek and Roman world from which Christianity was birthed.

Our goal is to level out the playing field of miraculous claims and show the Christians who insist on their Jesus being the only one to have performed such miracles, that they need to contend with the obvious fact that this isn't the case. The Greek and Roman world was flooding with tales of Gods and heroes who performed extra-ordinary deeds. I think this path of learning can help defang fundamentalism and help people appreciate the deeper meaning of these stories and why they were written in the first place. This documentary is setting out to place Jesus in his historical, cultural & literary context. Put another way, it would be odd if the stories of Jesus didn't have miracle tales. This is what you did to your hero's & gods at this time and place in the world.

We all are born, live a life which is often full of struggles, diseases and hard to get through, then we die. The miracle stories touch on the deepest issues all humans have to experience in some ways. We should recognize that the story is what is ultimately where the meaning is.

Olympic ‘Last Supper’ scene was in fact based on painting of Greek gods, say art experts

The idea, Jolly said, was "more to have a big pagan party linked to the gods of Olympus, Olympian, Olympianism … You'll never find in me any kind of wish to mock, to denigrate anything at all. I wanted a ceremony that repairs and reconciles."

Jolly did not name the painting that inspired the tableau, but art historians in France and the Netherlands have pointed to van Bijlert's work, a portrayal of the ancient Greek deities gathered for a feast on Mount Olympus.

The Dutch art historian Walther Schoonenberg was in no doubt. "The tableau vivant or 'living painting' in the opening ceremony of Paris 2024 was of The Feast of the Gods, by Jan van Bijlert from 1635," Schoonenberg said on X...

The Bible Geek Podcast 22-004 (Robert M. Price)

Can you pontificate a bit on the various schools of thought on dating New Testament literature and the Apostolic Fathers?

Is there a translation that you can recommend for a first time Bible reader?

Was there a Paul in history; how and why did these writings get attached to his name?

Has the Bible itself become an idol?

What percentage of Paul’s "authentic" letters would you estimate to be first person fiction?

I recently read 1 Enoch, and I have some questions about the angelic beings it features known as the Watchers. It occurred to me that, although I've long known the story of their descent to earth and their fornication with, and corruption of, us mortals, I don't think I've ever heard an explanation of where they got the name Watchers.

My first thought was that watching/witnessing, and hence the ability to stand in judgement over those being observed, are functions often associated with deities. So the idea of angelic "watchers" could derive from this association.

When we combine this theory with the idea of the stars as God's "heavenly host" - ie. his angel subordinates - could it be that the Watchers refer specifically to those stars which, being close to the Pole star, are always visible at night above the horizon? By never slipping out of view even during the shorter summer nights, these stars could be thought of as especially "wakeful", perpetually watching us throughout the year, and so be marked out as a special class of angel.

Why do you think the name of "Watchers" got attached to the story in Genesis 6:1-4, as opposed to just calling them fallen angels, or sticking with Genesis' generic "sons of God", or some other designation?

I'd like to know what you think of less popular, or perhaps more heavily editorialized volumes like the New World Translation. Do you think there are places where these convey an author's intended meaning more accurately than the mainstream, accepted versions of the Bible?

“Atheists believe in just one less God than Christians” - Cold Case Response (feat. Ocean Keltoi)

In a recent episode of the Cold-Case Christianity Broadcast, J. Warner offered a number of brief, rhetorically powerful responses to the objection: “Atheists believe in just one less God than Christians.” In a sense, Christians are also atheists when it comes to the existence of Greek, Norse, Egyptian and many other mythological Gods. Atheists say they just have enough sense to reject one more, the God of Christianity.

And, of course, we respond to Wallace's responses so that we can keep the conversation going beyond these surface-level copy-and-paste thoughts.
