Dutch feminists campaign for national monument to ‘witches’

Susan Smit, Bregje Hofstede and Manja Bedner, the chair and board members of the National Witches Monument foundation, have raised €35,000 (£29,000) for an official site of memory for about 70,000 people who died during a Satanic panic that swept Europe and the Americas.

"It's about creating more awareness around this history of, basically, femicide," Hofstede said. "To this day a witch is still a comic figure. In the Netherlands, every year at the carnaval, people burn effigies of witches … but there's hardly any knowledge of the actual history of people being burned at the stake."…

What Is the Satanic Temple, and How Did a Goat-Headed Statue End Up at the Arkansas State Capitol? - Pacific Standard

Hooves, horns, wings, and rippling muscle touched down briefly at the Arkansas State Capitol on Thursday, as the Satanic Temple unveiled an 8.5-foot tall bronze statue of Baphomet at the Arkansas State Capitol. Baphomet, a winged creature with a pentagrammed goat's head and man's torso, serves as a go-to signifier for the Satanic Temple. The statue was trucked into Little Rock for a First Amendment rally the Temple held last week, as a protest against the Ten Commandments monument that currently sits on the capitol grounds.....

Bloomfield must pay $700K for lawyer fees in Ten Commandments case

The city of Bloomfield is considering using online fundraising to pay the $700,000 it owes from the lawsuit regarding the Ten Commandments monument that was formerly located outside of City Hall. Because the courts ruled the monument violated the U.S. Constitution and represented a government endorsement of religion, the city must now pay the legal fees for the American Civil Liberties Union, which filed the complaint in 2012 on behalf of two Bloomfield residents, Janie Felix and Buford Coone.....

Rabbi: Roy Moore Just Sat There While I Got Bullied Over a Christian Monument – Friendly Atheist

Every day now seems to bring new stories about how Roy Moore allegedly hit on teenage girls (in the creepiest possible ways) and assaulted some while in his early 30s. Those stories should be front and center on the list of why Moore has no business being in the U.S. Senate. But it’s not like he was qualified before these allegations began coming out. Moore was someone who defied the rule of law multiple times — as the highest ranking judge in the state of Alabama — and someone whose primary goal, it seemed, was to use his public positions to promote his theology. Spreading fundamentalist Christianity meant far more than upholding the rule of law or being a decent human being. ....

For the past six months, the city of Belle Plaine (MN) has been embroiled in a controversy involving a Christian monument in Veterans Memorial Park. Because that park is public, The Satanic Temple applied to put their own monument for veterans right next to the display of a kneeling soldier in front of a Christian cross. ....

Gwinnett County Judge Jim Hinkle called protesters opposing a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E Lee in Charlottesville, Va., “snowflakes.” He said they had "no concept of history" and should “leave history alone.”....

‘Spiteful and petty’: Maine governor bans signs to Obama-designated monument

A decision by the Republican governor of Maine, Paul LePage, to ban signs to Katahdin Woods and Waters, a national monument designated by Barack Obama, has been described as “sophomoric and petty” by a member of the family that donated the 87,563-acre tract to the nation.

LePage made the controversial move, which was announced on Friday, pending the outcome of a federal review of 27 national monuments ordered by Donald Trump in April and being carried out by the US interior secretary, Ryan Zinke....

Inside Tehran's monument to US 'arrogance'

For close to four decades, the US embassy in downtown Tehran has been preserved in situ, although its diplomatic functions have long since ceased.

The 1979 hostage crisis, during which a group of Iranian students stormed the embassy and held dozens of Americans captive for 444 days, marked its final operational chapter. Although the hostages were released in early 1981 after the two countries struck a deal, the embassy did not reopen; instead, over the years, it gradually evolved as a monument to the bitter relations between Iran and the United States. ...
